George Suprick Superb in ASCS Patriot Sunday Night Special at Cayuga County Rich Vleck, WEEDSPORT, NY (July 27, 2008)- George Suprick has struggled on nights other than Saturday and on smooth and slick surfaces, but he eliminated both of those stigmas with his win Sunday Night at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Suprick, of Clarks Summit, PA, scored his 12th career ASCS Patriot win, leading all 25-laps at the tricky 3/8-mile, holding off a slew of challengers with mechanical performance and mental wherewithal in the third feature of the year for the A-Verdi Storage Containers King of Central New York Series. “This is the sixth race on the car, and it has been great for us all year,” said Suprick of his Pancho’s Racing Products J&J. “This means a lot to win hear at Weedsport, this place has great history and is a lot of fun to race on.” After claiming his National Parts Peddler Heat, the 2004 ASCS Patriot Champion redrew an outside front-row starting spot for the feature. On the start of the 25-lap feature, he would charge in hard on the top and snatch the lead away from Scott Kreutter; once he was clear of the No. 52, Suprick put his No. 87 to the bottom and kept it there the rest of the way. “I figured this race might be a race in to turn one, I caught the cushion in turn two before it went away and then ran the bottom,” added the veteran in Victory Lane. “I was really good in (turn) two and were going enough in three and four.” After a lap five caution for Chris Muhleisen spinning out of third after getting tangled with Mike Stelter, Scott Kreutter made his first bid for the lead with the same move that Suprick used to take the lead initially, but Suprick was up to the challenge.” “I saw (Kreutter) peaking his nose up there a couple times but I knew the bottom off of two is really where you need to be,” noted Suprick of the turn which leads to the bending backstretch. After the same story on the lap 11 restart, Suprick began to work slow his lap times by two full seconds as he began to work traffic, something that he said he had all under control. “I didn’t want to hit the lapped cars too fast. I knew I had a pretty good lead because I didn’t see and flash boxes going off, a little something I’ve learned over the years.” The win was also gratifying for Suprick because it came under conditions that he has seemed to struggle on over the last few years, something he admitted after climbing down from a wing dance atop his No. 87. While Scott Kreutter gave Suprick the biggest chase for the win, he would fall back to third on the final lap for the second night in a row, as point leader Bryan Howland would move around him for second. Howland, who won the Riverside Bar and Grill/ DeMaree Fruit Farms Four Laps of Fame Dash, used that experience to slice his way up from a ninth place starting spot to expand on his point lead. The Auburn, NY driver would also find relief in the point battle with Jared Zimbardi falling out on lap 11 with a broken front end. Kreutter’s third place showing was his fourth of the year. The 2007 Rookie of the Year said he was frustrated with his string of “almosts”, but admitted that it is better than his four seventh place finishes last season. Rick Wilson would struggle in a loaded heat, forcing him to start 18th in the feature. The inaugural Patriot winner at CCFS would rally though to finish in fourth, earning him the KSE Hard Charger of the Night. Blake Breen would round out the top-five, the second year in a row the Savannah, NY driver has finished in that spot at his hometown race. Doug Emery, another NPP Heat Winner, finished in sixth, ahead of Mike Stelter and Tommy Wickham. Ray Preston, in his first weekend back after a broken leg, was ninth, beating out Bobby Breen, who completed the top-10. Chuck Hebing, who was slicing his way through the pack, hit the inside wall on lap 10, cutting down the tire while under caution. “Cobra” would make it back out with help from a number of teams changing tires, and allowing the two time CCFS winner to finish in 12th. Hebing was planning on driving the Bud Burlew-Owned No. 28, but after a motor problem in hot laps, the decision to return to his own No. 45 was made. A total of 32 cars were on hand on a gorgeous Sunday Night. Doug Bowman’s first trip to CCFS would end without making a lap in his No. 57x. Bobby Magner made hard contact in his hot lap session and would also not take a competitive lap.
