To each his own....
You said it all in 4 words...As you can read I did not bash anyone for not using flash or for using it...
Also I guess it may of sounded like I was calling you out on the Photoshop thingy...That was a general statement not meant for any one person...I use real fine/ thin paint brushes...LOL...What I can't figure out is how this still keeps coming back up
to the top of the message board page...'sarcasim'
Theres a lotta folks who need to get out and smell some methanol
The light tube effect you speak of doesnt have to happen...Thats why theres
different settings on camera bodies and flashes...Twist the knobs!!!
Im done...
We now return you to your regularly scheduled program...
3rd turn...Dont forget your plastic either...Or make sure you pick up lots of pop cans...

Michael says, "Stop going to Manzy....worst lights in America". Now that's such a ridiculous statement that I couldn't believe he meant it, till I looked at his pictures on his web site. I believe it now. One word, and I looked hard and not for the first time. The word is sterile
Keep doing what you like to do Rafael and take what ever you think might be of help and let it go. I loved some of those shot's of yours from one of the best tracks in the nation, Manzanita Speedway

Excellent thread, (except for the personal bits of course) I have had almost all the questions answered as someone who wanted to take some decent pictures that I could have thought of (and plenty I didn't have a clue about)
I'm an illustrator specializing sprint cars for t shirts but a longtime (30 years or more) speedway photographer wanna bee.

taken in the middle of the turn..not on the straightaway... at a slow shutter speed with shadows and streaky track to show motion with Norman flash IT CAN BE DONE

Here is a picture I took this past weekend with a Canon 40d, 85mm 1.8 lens, And a Shoe Mount Canon 580EX. At Manzanita on the short track, in poor lighting conditions. So what is the truth? Fill me in on the "so called shoe mount shots". I am just curious!

With the photo printers available for less than $100 & the quality of 8x10 prints they deliver, why would any photographer trying to sell a pictue put anything good online?

that and I can only speak for myself but when I put photos online i set the resolution really low for that reason, I dont want someone taking my work and printing them off on their computer, and with the photo being displayed online in that low resolution it shows the "lack" of quality.
that and the fact that Im just not that good

That is why I always put my watermark on the photo...usually touching the two left side tires so it would be hard to eliminate....I know that doesn't prevent some from stealing the photo but it is one thing that I do to prevent it from happening.

I ordered a Shamoo off the infomercial, it works well at removing "watermarks"

I don't bother with watermark or right click disabling. If folks want to make a copy of the 320x275 (business card) size images on my site go for it. That being said, I know my images are on hundreds of websites all over the place. I have yet to find any that permission was not asked for first. With the exception of sometimes someone on a message board posting a photo of mine. So far, they have all given me credit for the photos. Technology being what it is we will soon all have flash - php - css websites that will all but eliminate the ability to steal others work.
As for the Normans. I thought about getting one at one time. At the time I was using a Metz 60 Ct4. I seen guys have to play around with them to get them to work a lot of times. And they had to carry all that weight. Then the graininess went out of or was greatly reduced in digital cameras and the shoe mounts became better (580ex II gn190/iso100 .35 recycle with external pack at full power) and it just did not seem worth it. Every year I see less and less of the normans and lumadynes. Folks I thought would never change.
Boy if this thread hasn't come full circle. A little bit of everything for everyone in here.

I have a quantum turbo. I have had it for 4-5 years now. It will shoot about 4 nights of racing without needing a recharge.

Unless Norman's have come a long way I wouldn't recommend them. The duration of the flash at 200 w.s. was 1/400th of a second. It was 1/800th of a second at 100 w.s. which is a little better but still not as good as an Ascorlite or a Lumedyne and some of the others mentioned here.

I can see there is a wealth of knowlege out there. I also can see there are a bunch of you guys I could learn a few things from ans shoot the shit with. There also are those I could care less if I ever run into but I won't degrade anyone's stuff, either. Not saying I am anything here, but being so full of yourself that you really are a dick is nothing short of pathetic. Hill, you say there are only about a half dozen photographers that you have any respect for......well, you may be lucky to have that amount with any respect for you. If you want to be a dick, it's no skin off my back but I have seen some of your stuff and I am not going to take a back seat to you ever. And, just because you didn't get favorable results from Manzy, maybe it it was just you. Other shooters seem to fare quite well there.
I still haven't figured out the big deal about the Norman strobes either. From what I have seen watching those that have them, they are a lot of trouble to use. I shoot with my Nikon SB800 flash that cost right at $400 (or whatever, I don't have it in front of me right now) and I have gotten magazine quality shots with it (if you get Flat Out, you've seen them).
Now for another touchy subject, it seems. While I agree that stealing is wrong, which would amount running a photo off the net and selling it for profit, I do not see what's wrong with pulling one off and just using it for reference or something to help you learn or whatever. If you don't sell it, it's not theft. I have seen a Texas photographer buying photos at Knoxville and then see him at Wal-Mart a short time later having copies of those photos made on their computer printer. My basic reason for this is, have you ever downloaded an article or some paperwork on your equipment off the net? Isn't that stealing in a way because you are not paying anything for it.

Here spot....catch this...
It's a public forum...you should really watch your fingers. There might be children reading.
If it mattered to me who respected me or not I might care about what another keyboard jockey, who I have never met, has to say about me. My opinion doesn't matter just as much as yours doesn't. I never forget that. It's just great that we have a country and many forums to express them. If you think your opinion matters in life....you should retire to a log cabin in the woods, without an in-road, or electricity...and do it quickly. There and only there will you find the audience that might care about your opinion.
And by the way...Full of myself huh? I like how you puffed out your chest with the "if you get Flat Out, you've seen them". If that Isn't someone being just a tad full of themselves, then I will be more than happy to buy you a glass house.
Manzanita is a bad track for visual spectating, with a camera or with eyes. I grew up in Phoenix, it was more than just a recent destination in my 29 years. A track with an obscured backstretch by design, and lowly positioned orange hued (tungsten maybe?) lights isn't what I would consider a viewing pleasure. It is a truly historic facility that has helped our sport become what it is today. I am sure the people of Phoenix and the world appreciate it for what it is....despite it's shortcomings. I know I do.
I view photography as a pure form of art. That requires knowledge, skill, time, money, and hard work to even consider yourself talented at. It's 100% subjective...opinions welcome. Buy em or don't buy em....look or don't look. But even a blind man can spot a turd....
