Well not at PAS per say, but Shuman getting in USAC's hair does bring a smile to my face. I love USAC, but not here permanently, just a visitor thank you. Personally, I'm old school and like qualifying and if I don't see the water truck I'm late. Car count is important of course but I just can't see the California or AZ boys just running 360's. A sprint car series on our side without the big engines is just not our style and hasn't been for a long time. Yes, there has been some small Ci engines that have done well in the past and Sherman has done very well with a very expensive 360 on Manzy's 1/2 against the 410's, but that all went out the window in the late 60's for the most part. It might not make a difference to the NASCRAP fans what's under the hood or who built it but in our sport those things have always mattered and hopefully always will.

Kenny

BIGFISH im curious how you came up with the idea that the 360 engine sherman ran with the 410s was a VERY EXPENSIVE one? as a matter of fact my dad purchased that engine for no more than 8,000. dollars and we let my uncle dave ellis and my cousin Jeremy sherman barrow it cuz they blew up their 410 on the friday race, that engine sat in the back of our shop for MANY years! same old valve springs and all nothing was changed. As a matter of fact that very engine is in my sprint car now and TRUST me its nothing amazing haha

Now those were some great post's, thanks guys.

Don I saw some of Shavers stuff at Portland and at the Copper Classic when I came home . A lot of guys had Donavan's and Rodec's in those mods as well. I remember it when they started running fast enough to make the Indy car race. Remember Gary Bettnhausen's mod with a big car dove tail and a long nose? I digress LOL... 85 was the year I came back from the Pacific Northwest and man that was a good year for CRA. The gas man was on the way, Billy was coming and Shuman and Leland ruled Manzy but that crazy old flat tracker, Wirth, could steal the show along with a number of other California boys Nofsinger etc. I was so excited to see those guys again I hit my head going through the arches at Manzy..LOL I digress again.

We all know hooking it up is the problem with the big ponies and weight up front in the early day's of the big block. "The funny thing is that if you went to open fuel and engine rules, with a little ingenuity you could build a competitive engine for about 1/2 the cost of today's limited 410. Don't believe me? Ask Ron Shaver or any other top professional engine builder". That is something that many people have known for a long time but why would they change it, only if they had to, right? Think how much fun it would bring back along with the excitement of some old fashioned American ingenuity that used to be such a big part of this sport, and a price break. A win, win, situation except for the powers that be.

Now as far as ASCS running the 410 show. I'm sure than more than just a few of us who has given it a thought, thought of the Arizona man who is in a position right now to take it over if that were to happen. How fitting would that be..Smile=

What was the subjuct again? LOL Good things are where you find them.

Yes, Sprint Car Racing's "Dirty Little Secret"

Until sprint car's get back to one class, this sport is still going nowhere.

Which one would be more fun, Unlimited Fuel-Engine Sprint Cars or limited 360 sprint cars?

That's the race I'm speaking of and it's one of the few races where everybody remembers who ran 2nd, and then thinks real hard to remember who won the thing.

I was going by what some of the guys who sit up in the top row were saying and some of these guys are in the pits often and involved with some track activities and are Jeremy fans!. I thought they new what they were talking about and that baby was sure purring that night. I've watched Jeremy from the get go and I can tell you the car was right that night and so was he. He drove that thing into turn one as hard and deep as I've ever seen anyone do it at that track in recent years and do it right. I could tell by the angle of his head as he pushed it forward that he was trying to get more, he was in the zone. One of the better runs I've seen, and that's say's plenty. I guess everything was right that night, almost.LOL

Sorry Robert, but it was pretty amazing that night! I'll be down for the show on the 5th, good luck.

Kenny

Since this thread has already been hijacked and the subject is far from the original post...........

would just love to see Perris with a pit so full people have to pit outside the track... Cars pushing off from both push off points.... Utterly pandemonium throughout the whole track.....

Folks, you want to talk about an entertaining show? I seem to recall a track from the old CRA midwest tours that ran street stocks as the final show of the night. There was a track entrance in the middle of the back stretch and a bar in the field behind the fence. So after the sprint cars ran for the night, the promotor blew one of those air horns and a bunch of good ol boys come stormin out of the bar, jump into their street stocks and race towards the single car wide opening into the track. Whoever/whatever survived, raced. That my friends, is entertainment.

I also seem to recall hearing that Little Springfield had a boxing ring inside one of the turns. If anyone wanted to fight in the pits, they had 2 choices. 1. Fight and accept a lifetime ban from the track. 2. Get in the ring and have at it in front of the crowd.

Oh, one more thing to add to the comparison of Perris "1/2" mile track to Manzy's 1/2 mile. We ran the same gearing at Perris as we do on the 3/8 (small) track at Manzy. So for Perris to be 1/2 mile around, they are probably including the distance around the grandstands too.

RickCee I like your idea about the bar and boxing ring, I think that would get a few extra fans (and maybe drivers) out at the PAS.

Maybe Gaunt could be the ring master or ref for the first match between either Cardey and Sheridan or Sheridan and Hanson. And have a portion of the bets, you got to have betting right, to go to a local charity.

Sprint car boxing at the PAS after dark hosted by Super Ricky by invitation only.

This one about the boxing ring is a classic Rich, and believe it or not, it would work. My brother has four sons, all within 6 years of each other. And, as you can imagine, when they were young there were strong sibling rivalries between them and frequently it would come to blows between two of them. Immediately my brother would say "stop it right there....go get the gloves". And no matter which two boys it was or who was there to watch it, the boxing gloves would go on and they would proceed to duke it out for the entertainment of all present. Now, this may seem a little barbaric to some. But I can tell you I witnessed this spectacle many times, and every time they fought until one dominated without question and inevitably there were tears. But in every case the tears were followed by laughter and hugs and the party went on. I can't see why the same thing couldn't work at a racetrack, between men. And imagine the fan draw with the possibility of a good old fashioned fight club style cage fight. I wonder if USAC would go for it?

Hey Rob and Kenny. How would you compare the Calistoga half-mile to Manzanita? I know Calistoga is alot flatter without the high banking, but it is certainly a dangerous track to run. I've been to Manzanita once a few years back and of course to Calistoga several times and years ago when it was run by NARC. I saw Billy Anderson end up in the trees in the first turn there. BTW Rob, Lucas Oil is now the official sponsor of CRA.

I believe that was Anthony Simone in the trees in turn-1.

Maybe another race sttmn, but I was there and it was definetly Billy Anderson (brother of Johnny) who went out of the park in a trophy dash run. Tangled with Dickie Rauser and out he went, but was unhurt. Circa 1972-73, it was the first time my late wife and I had made the 1 1/2 hour drive to Calistoga from our home at that time, Tracy. After the incident I looked at my wife, as we were sitting in turn one where he went out, and she was visibly shaken. Can't forget that one.

The Unlimited's, since they are cheaper to build than a competitive 360.
