One of the reasons the track is so dry is that SMS has been running the Factory Stocks last so they don't "tear up the track" for the Sprints. Some of the F/S guys as well as Sprinters have told me the stocks actually "bring the track back" before a Sprint race. It seems the SM promoter has something against the Factory Stock division and would just as soon they don't show up. Of course, the F/S division has the best car counts and sometimes the most entertaining race of the night! It's too bad Santa Maria Speedway won't make up with these guys and return to the old line-up that had the Sprints on last. Isn't that the definition of the "feature" or "Main" event?? Can anyone comment on F/S "tearing up the track"?

That normally helps and it should be done that way. However the track saturday was beyond repair. There was NO moisture in the thing at all. No clay was even on the wall. I do agree though that those factory guys put on a nice show, too bad we couldnt have seen them run right before the sprints and then maybe at least they would have scrapped the rubber off the top of the track. At my age I have seen enough racing to know that rubber sucks. I drove nearly 3 hours to see a quality race on a quality track, the racers did their best but the track didnt.

I worried a bit when they directed me to park my car just a little outside turn. I figured that it would be covered in mud when i got out. Once I got inside, I relized that mud on the car was not going to be a problem. Even in hot laps nothing was sticking to the wall. I think that I heard that they have a well on the property, did it dry up?

I just dont understand why anyone would want to constantly alienate the fans. You rarely hear any fan complain about a properly prepared track. The way I see it the promoter costs himself a ton of money by just the fans on this board that are vocal in saying they will not go back until the track prep issue is addressed there are plenty more that do not voice their opinions here but feel the same way. Water is expensive but not as expensive as the low car counts and crew members in the pits not to mention the fans that do not show up!
Just plain stupid really! If Manzy can keep some moisture on the track in the middle of a summer desert the friggin idiot at Santa Maria simply has no excuse!

Have any of the regulars from SMS voiced an opinion about this. Is this the way the track has been prepared throughout the season?

Reed. Naylor offered to help them with prep and was turned down.
Oak... bulldoze your house and put in a racetrack then I can come and tell you how it should have been done.
Ive tried not to bring the Swindler crap up in this thread but the
guys a crook... its a well known fact. People are still waiting on
payouts from last season in every division. Promises keep coming but no
money.
Honestly. I think if anyone wants to debate this with me any further
you all know what I look like, come sit in the stands and we ca n
preech on about it for hours and hours and then apply all we learn to
running our own racetracks.

Yes, it is the way the track is prepared ( or not) for EVERY RACE! I think this is the way for them to justify keeping the "cost down". They think by keeping it dry you take the horsepower away... guess what ! We have shocks and tires to play with! Let the racers decide! I think everyone would agree. The mufflers cost us money... The fuel @the track is $2.00 more a gallon than any where else...NO tires @ the track... memberships PAID, purse LOWERED! Track not even close to being prepd.. I know the water truck works because I personally hijacked parts and rebuilt the pump for free. Just trying to help out. Thanks Dave!

That would be the elusive 1/18th of a mile track?

I have been going to SMS since it opened in the Sixties,I have always heard of a natural vien of Clay on
the property. Can aynone confirm this?? If it is true why isn't it used?
I 'm sure most local race fans remember Doug Fort's ritual of track prep. That Man had it down to a fine science,I think someone else could pick up on it if they wanted to.Dave Swindell are you listining??
