Not just better....but better by a large margin than any winged race (WoO, GSC, or Civil War) held at the track over the past decade or so...I love both forms of sprint car racing and even pavement ( I know, I know) sprint car racing, BUT, Calistoga was meant for traditional sprint car raciing, as evidenced by last weekend's racing.

Agreed, Calistoga is too big and abrasive to run the wing cars there. When the rubber lays down with the winged cars there isnt anyone moving off it. I am very fortunate the non wing cars are back at stoga and look forward to it for a long time to come. Now Chico and Tulare... KEEP THE WINGS and bring in some non wing 410 for years to come that would be awesome. By the way the Gold Cup tonight is providing GREAT action the B main was goood. It is live all three nights on dirtvision.com free to listen or 14.99 to watch or free to watch if you know what your doing...LOL, I am enjoying it thats for sure.
Cheers!

I WAS THERE WITH MY SON AND WE REALLY ENJOYED THE NON WING SHOW. THE FIRST TIME I WENT TO CALISTOGA WAS IN 1979. MY DAD AND I WENT TO LOOK AT CAR'S BECAUSE HE WAS GOING TO BUY A NEW ONE TO RUN THERE. SAD TO SAY HE LOST HIS LIFE THERE AT THE END OF THAT YEAR AT CALISTOGA. I HAD ONLY BEEN THERE ONE OTHER TIME WHEN THE OUTLAW'S WERE THERE. WAS NOT HAPPY WITH THE SHOW. IT WAS GREAT TO SEE THE NON WINGER'S BACK OUT . MY SON AND I RACE WITH THE BCRA GROUP IN THE MIDGET LITE'S. WE RUN BOTH WING AND WITHOUT. WE BOTH LIKE THE NON WING DEAL BETTER. GREAT RACING. PLEASE LET SEE MORE NON WING SHOW'S AT CALISTOGA. CAMERON AND ZACH BEARD

Cameron is a great guy and after growing up being a fan of the two big 100 lap memorial races (the Johnny Key and the Lloyd Beard classic) I still remember meeting him back in 1989 only to learn he was Lloyd's son. Looking forward to the day we run into eachother again :-).....

I've got a lot of great memories of Calistoga, but that night isn't one of them. I'm glad you enjoyed last weekend and I hope we can do it again next year. If you'ld like to do something in memory of your dad, I'd be glad to help. I know we had the Lloyd Beard Classic for many years and I think it would be fitting to somehow include him in this event. If not, then at least copy some photos and bring them for our wall of memories under the grandstands (If you want to get a hold of me, just click on my user name above and send me an e-mail) .

So what does the future of the Louie Vermeil Classic look like Chad? Would you say that there is a strong possibility that this great event becomes an annual part of the USAC/CRA schedule? Judging by the strong turnout and enthusiasm of the fans, I would say that it would be hard to leave off. My Dad, his wife, and myself had a great time, and we are most certainly looking forward to next year. Kudos to you Chad, as well as Steve Howard, USAC, and all the other people who made this wonderful weekend of traditional sprint car racing at Calistoga possible.

You're right again Rob. Someone once stated here that a sprint car with a wing is really not a sprint car but a super modified.

mmmm, who could that have been? Oh, it was me!

That's right Henry, take the wing off and you have a sprint car. Beautiful man, you got that right. Follow me now, when you put a wing on said sprint car you modify it, right? It's a modified sprinter and was called such when they first started doing it. That along with some descriptive terms not as flattering..LOL I'll tell you another thing, the fans at Ascot and Manzy knew and still know what a real sprinter is and that's why we still don't run wings, just like the Indiana boys and some of the other Midwest guys. I still wonder what went wrong in Pennsylvania though..LOL

Another thing, to say that you steer more with the gas with a winged car than a non winged car is just ludicrous. For instance, when they run Manzy the good ones don't even lift, no alone steer with the gas. Watch the Bobby Michnovicz in car video on a thread below and listen to him control the car with the throttle. You can't tell me a winged car would be working the throttle on that track nearly that much.

You don't hear me bad mouth any of them like some do, but I know what a modified sprinter looks like and so does USAC/ CRA, ASCA and other sanctioning body's.

You knew you could yank my chain didn't you Tripcrwn?

Kenny

One elbow up and a hook. 1964 Ascot, what a year. It looks like the Bobby and Allen show..I was a Sophomore in high school and Allen was almost as crazy as that little blond down the street..LOL

I certainly meant no harm Kenny. I just couldn't remember who that great quote was attributed to - but no more. It belongs to you. BTW a perfect way to describe the difference between a winged super modified and the traditional sprint card.

On another note we must be close in age as I graduated from Tracy H.S. in 1965.

Covina class of 66 and I took it as a compliment.. I remember at the Copper Classic when some of the guys put a wing on a Champ car and ran with the super mods. I also remember when Gary Bettenhausen showed up with one that had a big car dovetail and kind of a long needle nose. It looked cool in that pearl white with a #2 on it, but it was just so so.

All my gear head friends worked there, no rich Moms and dads to buy em a Mustang or a GTO. We put together some good races out of that place, didn't we? A lot of good cars came from Edgwood and W Covina as well....... B.P., you must have been a low rider..Jimmy Reed, over and over and over again.LOL

No comment on the L.A. county issued sock hat huh? That speakes volumes..LOL

Hey Rob, have you had a chance to look in your wifes yearbook yet? I think you might be looking in the wrong book my friend. When I came back to Ca from Phoenix I lived around the corner from Walt Kennedy in Upland for my freshman year. Walt was still racing years later, I thought he would go on forever. I think I was married, divorced and had raised two kids and he was still going strong..LOL Well maybe I'm exaggerating some.
