#2....... I won't do it again. Been to a couple of the shows held during the day because of rain. HOT, dusty, rubber down, follow the leader. You described it perfectly. Not worth the dehydration and blistering sunburn...lol!!!

Any updates on Wackos. It seems to change owners nearly every year. A great place to eat and hang out having a few cold ones. I cannot believe nobody has mentioned the yard sales.

The former Main Street Cafe is a shell of it's former self. Visited it this summer, our waiter was a 60 yr old man in a 50 yr old button up shirt, unbuttoned to nearly his waist, exposing a knarly mass of grey chest hair. The food sucked, but I didn't eat much as I was confident some of the nasty bastard"s hair got in my food. Drove by a couple weeks ago, looked like it's closed.

We're still a ways off from the Nationals, but by the time mid to late July sets in, the build-up is in full swing.
The list.
Of
course you go to the races, but what about the other eight hours a day
when you’re not watching the races? Or, what if you just want to
experience the full flavor of this enlightening cultural phenomenon? I
humbly submit to you a list of ten things (in no particular order) you
must do to have the complete Knoxville Nationals “experience”.
10. Drive the karts at Slideways. Located
just north of town off Highway 14, the karts look like sprinters,
complete with tails and wings, and you race on an oval track. They even
feature a Mini-Nationals during the week. "Get sideways at Slideways",
what’s not to love?
9. Have a beer at the Dingus. “You’ll
never find a more retched hive of scum and villainy”-it’s a line from
the movie Star Wars, but it applies to the Dingus Lounge the week of
the Nationals. The bar itself is extremely small, but they expand out
to a super-sized beer garden. By Saturday afternoon, there’s a steady
chorus of cat-calls ringing out from the patrons behind the chain link
fence that surrounds the garden. The only question I have is the chain
link fence there to keep people on the street out, or to keep the bar
customers in?
8. Have a steak sandwich at the Marion County Cattleman’s tent. Located
next to the Skate Pit, outside of turn one, this food vendor is the
best you’ll find on the fairgrounds. With hamburgers, chicken and steak
sandwiches, plus the best sweet-corn east of Lincoln, it’s something that no race fan should leave Knoxville without trying. You pay up for these delicacies, but the Marion County Cattlemen’s Queen usually runs the cash register.
7. Camp out in the RV ‘village’ west of turns three and four. It’s the one place where you can be neighbors with the likes of Freddie Rahmer or Danny Lasoski
for the weekend. You’re also given an all access pass to the track’s
post-race nightlife. Survive staying up all night four nights in a row
and you’ll have some good stories to tell your friends for years to
come.
6. Watch one night from the pits. True,
you can’t see the racing as well, but to be in the middle of all that
commotion, is worth it. What other sports can you buy a pass and get
access to every competitor during the event? Just don’t get run over by one of the fifty push trucks, or angry sprint car drivers as they come tear-assing off the track.

Thank you!

Do they still have the pancake breakfast deal downtown - I think the Jaycees or somebody put it on? They had great pancakes! I haven't been there since the mid-90's - gonna try to make it back this year. Don't believe they have the "Bus Ride" anymore behind the main grandstand - nor the "what T-shirt" contest anymore either - right?

Iowa State Fair starts August 7th.
Main Street or whatever it's called now is terrible. Went there last week. Never again.
Pancake deal is still at the armory, I believe.
Should be some decent food venders by the track.
Wacko's is still pretty good, especially if you can sit outside.
Good Mexican resturant om Main Street.
English Creek is a good diversion and the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame has some fan seminars that may be interesting and get you out of the heat for awhile.
Several good golf courses in the area. I like the Blank Golf Course in Des Moines (SW 9th and County Line Rd.)...they also have a really nice mini golf for the family.
And...for those with internet access or for those who can't make the trip, The Full Throttle Racing Show will be on www.dirtvision.com (Wed-Sat) from 2pm-4pm central time each day for your listening pleasure.

I wouldn't recommend walking the Blank Park course... felt like I had walked nine holes and we were only on the 4th hole! Pretty nice course, just wish I had hit the damn thing straighter...

You're right Chilly. Pay for a cart unless you can hit'em straight. While you are golfing, you have the Blank Park Zoo for this kids (and the mini-golf).

Hey, Pella has a decent sports bar with pretty good food, if you are looking for a good lunch. Called the Sports Page...been there a few times and it's consistently good.
I never have bee much of an Udders fan. Last year was a real disappointment. I took a couple of my show's sponsors out there last year and had very poor service. The only times I've been there in fifteen years is during Nationals when someone really wants to go. I'll pass this year and just grill for a few selected friends coming into town out on the deck at home. Better food, colder drinks and much less expensive.

John's right...the Sports Page in Pella has consistently excellent food. The steak salad is a winner. Also, Swamp Fox in Knoxville has a real delicacy in its fried green beans. Sounds weird, but they taste better than french fries and are somewhat healthy for you! A must have for sure.

Duane...just south of the square. Their sandwiches and salads aren't bad. More of a casual upscale (for Knoxville) kind of place.

Where have you been Duane? The Swamp Fox has been in town for about 4 years.
