"Give the guy a break, maybe it was just a one time slip up."

I believe 1x 100 = 100. The hell with personal feelings towards the man. This is nothing but track record facts. The facts are, where he goes, the track goes to hell, period, 'nough said!

No thanks, i'll go to Irwindale or Altamont if i want to see an asphalt show. If they cant get that track prepared right when the weather is good i cant even imagine what a sh*t hole that place will be the last weekend in July. I'd rather stay home & slam my head into a wall.

I have had ample time to think about the lack of track prep Saturday at Santa Maria Speedway. Still I am very, very dissapointed in the terrible condition of the surface. Anyone who thinks that was a good surface needs to have their head examined. Santa Maria has a legacy of perfectly moist and smooth, tacky clay. This crud they have been passing off as a decent surface is a complete joke. There was rubber and dust flying in the heats! The 360 non wing lap record is a mid 13 second lap. Most the cars Saturday ran mid 15 second laps. I spoke at length with a guy that used to prep the track under Doug Forts direction back when Dougs health was failing. He said Doug had a long standing ritual of how and when he worked the track and that now they dont even do anything remotely close. He has offered his services but it seems Dave Swindell does things "his way or no way". When was the last time you saw muddy cars packing the track? How about clay covered cars outside the front gate? These are all things long standing during the good days at SMS. No more it seems. Oh how I long for the days of Doug Fort and his understanding of entertainment value and quality racing surfaces. Please someone step up and fix SMS before its too late.

Who the heck is this guy Bill Gates? He must be a fair weather rae fan. There is more than (1) type of race track and surface. The USAC/CRA drivers showed they could put on a show on any.

There are different kinds of dirt track surfaces. A true racer will adapt and provide a good entertaining show. The USAC/CRA drivers are that type. Let's try to enjoy the differences, instead of tearing down a promoter. There might not be enough of them around someday. We had 6 lead changes. last Saturday. Normally there are only one or two. Two or three of them would have been brand new winners. All dirt tracks are not Perris, but, they all have their own mistique.

STTMN:

Glad you had a good time. Our sport really needs those who like what they see and will continue to come back. As for the rubbered down track, whats OK for some, isn't always so OK for others. For example:

If your a car owner who had to foot the tire bill, your not very happy. A handful of those owners really felt the sting of their wallets that night. Dry tracks are a part of our sport. Car owners do however expect a realistic attempt to keep that to a minimum (which didn't happen in this case). Makes one wonder if Indiana's Dave Allison is now in charge of west coast track preps....LOL. Just depends on which pair of eyes one looks through.

Onward to the next race!!!!

PS: Rich, you making ALL the races out there?

OAK: You catching all the chatter the "mother ship" is taking on back east? Indiana Open Wheel peeps sure have a lot to say about the issues the "mother ship" is having. Makes for some interesting reading. If you haven't seen it, might wanna take a peek.

The ability of the USAC/CRA drivers and teams to put on a great show for the fans (on any track and surface) has never been a question. There are concerns about last Saturday's track surface.

There were teams that burned off both rear tires in hot laps (4-6 laps) and went through anywhere from 5-9 tires on the night.

With car counts becoming a concern for the series, how many teams can continue to travel or even run when they easily spend over $1000 in tires alone (per car) on a race night? This also happened at other "out of town" racetracks earlier this year.

When the fans and tracks see that only 20 cars showed up at an "out of town" race, would they continue to support the 410 sprints? Also, you have to consider that several of these tracks have a 360 series, with a similar car count and a lower purse.

For this deal to work and get better for everyone- people need to work together. This includes the tracks, promoters, teams, owners, drivers, sponsors, fans, and USAC/CRA.

Yeah, i have been following that deal pretty closely. Funny, i didn't think anything would make those guys move on from the lynch Dave Allison threads the last few weeks. Looks like usac provided those guys with something else to "discuss" lol.

Lance hit the nail on the head. In addition, I go to a track to be entertained not to be covered head to toe in dust and to have to make a four hour drive home feeling like sand paper. I understand that it happens from time to time but this has become a tradition there. I think the last time I went was the first time Nadine raced there. I am not sure how long ago that was but at least 2003 I think. This has been going on longer then that and I will not return until they mend their ways!

I dont know this promoter from Adam but I will tell you he is a frigging idiot for ruining a great track! Not to mention the cost involved in running a race car there. This is like the last time they ran Terre Haute. If I recall correctly, there was one team in 3 days bought 19 tires! That is insane when you need a new RR for every time you got on the track.

They need to get Jim Naylor out there to teach Dave Swindell how to prep a track.

John,

No, I'm not making all the races this year. I help out Kruseman when he runs the 3rd car. Yes, I have heard how happy everyone is with the 16th Street boys these days. Seems like the "run em out of town folks" are ready to slide Mr Allison down the pole a little to make room for Mr Snyder. Just like in other places, I think people are complaining about symptoms, not the problem itself.

Santa Maria used to be the raciest track we went to but if it's not racy, there isn't a whole lot else to draw me to it other than a pretty drive up there so I haven't been there in years. If you want to keep car owners happy and coming back to your track, you better make sure that if they win they don't lose money on just just tires and driver alone. Most of the time you can make money if you win but a rubber down track is guaranteed money loser for all.

Hey John, if you happen to dig up a rusty old low mileage Plymouth out there, you let me know okay?

Yea, what a BUST that deal came out to be. We had freaking peeps from overseas here for that thing. Our local CBS station pre-empted regular programming to show that deal live. They took that 'ol gal out of her grave and moved her into our Convention Center Arena where they SOLD OUT the joint to view the proceedings.

The only thing that made it was a time capsule that was so welded shut nothing could get inside to ruin it. There was a flag (48 stars at that time), some cards where people guessed what the census would be in the year 2007 and some misc. stuff. All-in-all, it turned out to be a dud as that 'ol car was nothing but a pile of rust. There was practically nothing left of the interior either. Oh well, Tulsa made the news for something........LOL

As for the back east deal.......seems there's concern that the NASCAR teams are getting some favors from the red white and blue boys, but I guess you already have your pulse on that too. I'll look for ya on my next trip out towards the later part of the season!!
