the typical drag engine only makes around 900 revolutions from the drop of the hammer to the shut off so by going from 1320 feet to 1000 they are going to cut the revolutions down to what maybe 750 the only problem with Scotts crash and unfortunate death was the shut down area way to short if that crash would have happened at norwalk or columbus i beleive Scott would still be racing maybe a little sore but still alive those fuel cars should never have been on that track in NJ JMO

The NHRA will announce on Friday that the 1000 foot track will be in effect for the remainder of the 08 season at the very least.

I reckon the days of the 1/4 mile fuel races are over unless they peg them back to 290-300 mile an hour.

47 - agreed, NJ is relic compared to the newer facilities, built a long time before 300mph was a reality.

In response to the death of Scott Kalitta, the NHRA announced that effective with the Mile High National's next weekend in Denver, all Top Fuel and Funny Car races will be shortened to 1000 feet (instead of 1320 feet) while they evaluate what happened, why and how to prevent it in the future. The Mile High National's is also scheduled to be the first event that John Force's new design car will be mandatory for all Funny Cars. Force's chassis was created in response to Eric Medlin's death last year....the first in 30-something years for FunnyCar/Top Fuel.
The article can be found here:

Quite a bold step, I can't imagine WoO, USAC, etc being able to make a similar move in response to a tragedy. NASCAR has done something kind of along those lines with the requirement of HANS, better inspection of seats and belts, but this is even more radical than the COT.

Eric Medlin's death was the first in a FUNNY CAR in 30 years, but I'd be willing to bet there have been about 2 DOZEN Top Fuel deaths in the last 30 years.
Going to 1000 feet EVERYWHERE is a bad idea. Going to 1000 at places like Englishtown with not enough runoff area is a good idea. If Englishtown wasn't so close to the almighty New York City market they probably won't have been on the schedule, because of the short runoff.
As far as this being "the end of big time drag racing", most of the appeal is the sound explosion at the start of Funny Car/Top Fuel races. There are no grandstands at the finish line of any strip I've ever seen on TV. Even at a 1000 feet, nobody can tell who the winner is without the Win lights, unless it's a blowout.
