COONS, DARLAND, TYLER CONTINUE SILVER CROWN POINT BATTLE IN SATURDAY’S “4-CROWN”

SEPTEMBER 15, 2008 --- Three drivers enter this Saturday’s “4-Crown Nationals” at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio with a chance to carry the USAC K & N Silver Crown Series point lead to the season’s final race at Phoenix, Ariz. The series concludes November 6 at Phoenix International Raceway but only 57 points separate Jerry Coons Jr., Dave Darland and Brian Tyler with 66 available at Eldora.

Coons is seeking his initial Silver Crown title, while Darland and Tyler have already been there. All three are former “4-Crown” Silver Crown champs, Coons winning last year, Darland in 2004 and 2005 and Tyler in 2002.

Saturday’s 50-lap Silver Crown feature follows a 25-lap Mopar National Midget feature and a 30-lap National Sprint feature on the 1/2-mile banked dirt oval.

This year’s “4-Crown” is the 28th and historically serves as a pivotal event in the Silver Crown title chase.

Coons is in the midst of two USAC National title races, also second in the National Sprint points. Championships in both would make him a “Triple Crown” champion, having won the National Midget crown the past two years.

Tyler is on a “hot streak,” winning both the “Tony Bettenhausen 100” at Springfield, Ill. and the “Ted Horn 100” at DuQuoin, Ill. in August. The last driver to win three straight Silver Crown races on the dirt was J.J. Yeley in 2002 and 2003.

Nobody else has won on the dirt this year, Coons taking the series opener at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix and Darland the ‘Sumar Classic 100” at Terre Haute, Ind. in July.
