Hope he got the insurance on that. What I dont get is after the weekend he had at Stoga, why he did that. But again, maybe thats why.

He wheeled his rental car, Ford Mustang, about 6 laps, around the famed half mile, then put it in turn2 wall. about 1:oo a.m.

It's really too bad. I heard that his wife was very upset with his actions (crying etc). I myself can sort of understand the whole rental car thing. Historically race drivers and rental cars make the best stories, but unfortunately this isn't Missouri and it's not 1972. The only part I was really upset about was the mess that the wind made after he went around knocking over garbage cans. The fairgrounds wasn't too happy either and I even suggested that maybe the wind had just blown them over, but people that were there say that wasn't the case. So......Monday morning I woke my kids up and postponed our day of swimming and relaxation to go clean the fairgrounds. One of Mike Benson's sponsors was towing his camper out and instead of taking his family home, he came back and helped us clean the race track, the infield, outside the track where the racers camp and under the grandstands. It was hot and windy and there was trash everywhere. I know that the clean up was included in the contract with the fairgrounds, but I didn't want the last impression of a wonderful weekend to be a big mess left behind. I would like to Thank my boys and my wife along with Phil Seavey for helping us get it clean.

You and Phil made Charlie's day Chad! You and your wife deserve SOOOOOO much credit for making this event special. It was such a pleasure to be around you guys this past weekend and I can only hope to see you again soon. Again - there were so many people who made this event special and I'm sure many people on the outside saw enough to be able to put you guys at the top of that list. Thanks again from me!

After the crash of the rental car, Darren was escorted back to his hotel. If you are looking for the person that knocked over the garbage cans, look to the driver of the 71 car and his people looking to build a bond fire..................

Sorry I missed that.................... we were amazed Sat. that so many teams left their cars in the infield.... as we staggered back from Suzie's to the track the thought crossed my mind about trying to fire one off............. thankfully it was nothing more than a thought.
As funny as that stuff is I hope it doesn't jeopordize the chance of running this race again next year...... It sure looked to me like the Calistoga PD was out in force......not too sure how much the residents & town really like the races........
On a side note......racing was awesome.......... BK was up on the wheel Sat. night! Would have been decent Sun. too but he timed in slow & the feature went flag to flag.
Jrod, Perovich, & hansen were unreal in the midgets.......... lap after lap just bombing the cushion........ grande huevos my friends.........
Drivers really showed alot of respect for eachother & the track!
Can't wait til next year......just one request.......... make a USAC National show & bring all the big boys with their midgets & Sprints!

I'm sorry. I must have been misinformed and I apologise to Darren. Like I said, I was hoping it was just the wind and I hate to blame one person since that's not usually the case. I didn't Even use his name in my last post, because I'm learning that I'm usually wrong. I've obviously got more to learn.
Again, I'm sorry for pointing the finger at only one guy.

ps..the bottom line is that a few crazy racers made a mess and a few tired racers cleaned it up. Not a big deal. I have kids and some of them want to be racers, so all I ask is that when my kids do something crazy or stupid, maybe somebody will be there to clean it up and have their back. Deal?

I won't be buying /wearing some folks 'T's....low class..but you and yours are high class/top notch race fans..thanks for you efforts...wonder if the car was on Crossno's credit car....

Man, this is truly an unfortunate situation. I hope this whole incident does not ruin the prospects of USAC coming back to the big 1/2 mile next year. LOL, I guess Clayton is a real Cowboy.

Ok, just coming on here to clarify and appoligize for what happened. I actually only took the car into the track to use the headlights to load up my teammates car that got crashed the night before. It was a chassis/motor, and we had to carry it into the trailer. Well once everything was loaded, the track was empty, lights out, and we were the only by standers around i decided to cut a couple laps. On the third lap, i spun, decided that was enough and went to pull out the gate. I was met by a bunch of people that heard the action but didnt get to see it. So i went back out. didnt get away with a spin the second time, and I scraped the wall.
I have talked with the grounds manager and the promoter and appoligized for the incident and lack of judgement. Everything is good, i made a point to make sure that this wouldnt affect USAC coming back there and the manager said that it wouldnt be a factor, and that everything is ok for the next time.
There were no alchohol/drugs involved, just bad judgement on my part. The car had only a scraped LR quarter panel. I was not arrested, nor do i have any charges pressed. Not sure what the whole deal on the trash cans is, but i was not involved in that.
Once again my appologies to the track, USAC, fans and fellow drivers. It was a mistake on my part alone, and i have learned from it. The last thing i flew to California to do is hurt the appeal of non-wing racing.

That is a class move by Clayton. I never really saw the reason for the whole burn him at the stake mentality of a few but he owned up to his actions and that is appreciated. I only hope next year he gets the setup dialed in on the rental car first before laying down some laps...LOL. Shoot every year after the gold cup on saturday night it seems someone is out on the track racing around in some sort of pit cart vehicle or motorbike and booze is generally involved but never any common sense but still a good time is had by all regardless. :-)

I agree Clayton's apology was needed and he stepped up. Good for him. As far as "burn him at the stake mentality" the thought never crossed your mind that Clayton's late night antics might jeopardize the future of the race? Can't believe that. At stake was all of the hard work that the local organizing group, including Chad Hawkins, put into making the race a reality. I think most people thought the race was at risk given the anti-racing view of the Napa County fair board and the obvious yuppie faction that now resides in Calistoga. Maybe you can now understand the mentality of the few. Then again, maybe not.

i have one question? why did he post his message on the Indiana board how many fans from Indiana attended the race? it is true the Fair Board and the town don't support racing any more. hell the city police almost ran me off the road when they responded to the first incedent. and i was already on the shoulder.

That is a good question. Seems like he should apologize to the race organizers anyway and this would be the place to step forward and do it. I like Clayton though and his apology on the IOW board was I believe sincere.

It crossed my mind as well, and that is the reason I chose to post Clayton's response on this board, since most of the people here probably attended the race.
