Many people have been trying to get Tony Jones and the Alexander Racing Team to make the long tow to Calistoga this weekend. From what I understand, Tony hasn't been supporting the series since he won the 2007 championship and did not receive the amount of money that was promised to the series champion. Again, this is just what I have heard but it is pretty evident that he has not been at all the races this year. I'm sure Tony is a man of principle and probably just as stubborn as any other racer, but I have to say that there will surely be a blank spot on the Calistoga Speedway this weekend without Tony. He is not only great on the big tracks, but brings his own flair to any event. I really wish Tony could see it from the perspective that Steve Kinser saw at Eldora and be there for the fans regardless of the series.

My first race as a fan was a sprint car race. The only cars that raced at Calistoga were sprint cars. So my first time racing anything was in a sprint car at Petaluma and one week later at Calsitoga without a wing. That was the first race car I ever painted and it was inspired by a legend and hero to many. It may not have looked as nice as the Gas Chem Car and I'm sure I never came close to driving it like Bubby, but I can tell you that I felt like Bubby a few times.

I just know that if Tony Jones came to town that there would be a lot of silver #4's running at the local quarter midget and go kart tracks in the next few years. Besides, the last person that I remember climbing the fence at Calistoga was Mrs. Horton when one of her sons (Rick or Ron) got upside down and the gate was locked leading to the pits. (He was ok and Mom made it back to the stands in one piece).

There are a lot of Northern California fans that have never seen you race and it would be a shame if they never get to. I for one am blessed to have seen you race at Perris and your Dad race at Ascot many times. So if you're out there Tony and your on the fence about this weekend....call Steve Howard and get some tires and get some fuel and get your butt to Calistoga....Please...for us fans.

Unfortunately, but understandably, the "Open Wheel Cowboy" won't be able to run Calistoga this time. He flew back to Indiana to be with his son who is facing some serious surgery this week. I know Tony will appreciate your kind words Chad. Cya up there as we can't wait for the traditional sprinters to get back to business at the historic 1/2 mile. It's been like 30+ years for me. Hope Clayton shows.

He just finished breathing a sigh of relief for his dad and now his son is in the hospital? That's gotta be hard on a guy. I wish him the best and we'll keep his family in our prayers.

ps..we'll just have to come to Perris to see him in action once he gets home.

Calistoga is going to be a stellar show, anyway you look at it. Tony not being there will not even be noticed.

Kinser was already at the track when he made that decision.

Thats a heck of a thing for a USAC official to say about their reigning champion.

Tripcrwn,

Daron Clayton is here, they are fitting his seat in the car and he will be traveling with the iTi Performance Motorsports Team up to Calistoga. He will be in the 83 car not the 2 as previously stated.

Casey Shuman outed him on this thread from last year. http://www.hoserforums.com/forum~ThreadID~3138.htm#thread22099

Sttmn does indeed identify himself as a USAC official in the thread gjracefan is referring to. That is one hell of a thing to say about Tony Jones Sttmn, care to try and clean it up?

Hmmm, maybe its attitudes like this why some teams are saying racing isnt as fun as it once was.

I for one will notice and I would bet you that there are several others. Seems that an official with USAC would be responsible enough to refrain from comments like this - especially involving Tony Jones and his personal life that involves his father-in-law, father and son. No wonder Tony has a bad taste in his mouth about this organization. We all are waiting for your explanation.

It is all in the reading of it. I don't find what Dick said to be that bad. I think he is stating there will be a host of very talented drivers there, that 1-2 top drivers will not make it less of a show.

He still could've used a different wording to say it the way you did. ..."that 1-2 top drivers will not make it less of a show." I don't agree with you, it's less of a show without any, ANY top driver(s) and it is still poor wording for a USAC official to a USAC Champion.

you so have a right to your opinion, all I was trying to say is words can be taken out of the order of which they were intended... that's all. An official is nothing but a big fan of racing that wants to be involved. I have been around great ones and others I didn't care for. They are people also.

While it is understandable that this gentleman is a race fan, just like the rest of us, the fact remains that he is a USAC official. With that title comes a certain amount of objectivity. It is not politically correct for a USAC official, or any other official of a particular sport, to make those type of comments regarding participants. Now if Sttmn were just a regular fan, than his comments could be taken with a grain of salt. However, since he identified himself as a USAC official in last years dispute with Casey Shuman, on this very same board, he should be held to a higher standard. If he is bold enough to make these types of comments on a message board, who knows what kind of favoritism he might show at the race-track. Just my opinion, and I'm still waiting on your thoughts Sttmn.

Any event that Tony Jones is at is a better event than if he were not there. I find it hard to believe that a USAC official would make the statement you made.

You are reading to much into this comment. Everything that is ever said by an official, as many think he is, seems to be an invitation for all of you to jump on. As Mr Peterson has said all that I read into it is that there are going to be 40 - 50 other drivers out there that are really talented. This conspiracy theory stuff has got to stop........... Lets move on with the task at hand.......Seeing one hell of a race at Calistoga this weekend!!!!!!!!!

I did not comment on anything regarding Tony, personally, or his family. I didn't know that the comment I made could even have been taken that way. The comment I did make was that with all of the hoop-law and work that people have done and donations that have made to the racers, this will be a stellar show. With one driver not being there, and in this case, Tony, because he has more than one sickness in his family and he is there by their side, the race will still be a major success.

I don't know how anyone could have taken my comment any differently. I hope to meet you in Calistoga or if you are at your place of business in the late afternoon, I will come over to meet you. I did stop by last Friday to have a beer. I didn't have cash with me, only a debit card, so I had to leave.
