I don't know, Duane, but as usual, with most people, it isn't a problem but I have
been sitting in my regular seat at Knoxville many times and someone with a cigar,
pipe, or whatever sits one or two rows in front of us and doesn't seem to care whether
or not we want to sit there and breathe their smoke. I guess after years of sitting there,
I could get up and move if I don't like it, huh? What is the answer?

Nebraska just past their state wide No Smoking law yesterday...it will go into effect June 2009. I think our law is for enclosed public areas....I don't think it will affect open air areas such as Eagle Raceway.....I could be wrong.

I'm with ya! But where it really bothers me is when I have my kids with! Sometimes a person just wants to go up to a smoker and pull that frickin' thing out of their mouth and shove it in their eye! Maybe that was too much information!!! Beer splashing on my kids is well enough.

Hopefully someday the powers that be pass laws limiting the amout of times kids run up-and-down the aisles?
Perhaps they can mandate that if you get up, get all of your crap at once. A soda this time, a snack after each heat race, poddy breaks, another trip down to get a shirt, yet another trip to grab a program, kid wants a hot dog, kid wants this and that all night..Hearing kids cheer for wrecks, not standing still for National Anthem then kids getting listless during intermissions and kicking the seat backs....Oh and then the blankets, jackets and god knows what else in them overstuffed duffle bags lugged through the rows.
This smoker sees a Two-Way Street, you think I don't put up with annoyances as well? Sucks having a newly purchased white t-shirt decorated from some brat waving a sip cup full with the red Kool-Aid. And not getting so much as a "Let me pay for that..."
We all put up with something, as long as one group is not singled out 'cause If I gotta give something up, then someone else should as well. Only fair right?
I'm all for the "Family Section" as long as you keep your family in it.
Gonna step out for a smoke and calm down....

I've always said "smokers suck" (funny ha ha 'ya know....I could say smokers blow.....or smokers suck and blow....anyway.....) and I do see Michael 98A's point (very nicely, humorously, and intelligently made BTW). A lot of things bug the shit out of me but I'll take a smoker (most of which have become extraordinarily courteous) or a drunk over any number of Ritalin deprived kids and their overly self justifying parental units any day of the week. :-).

I can't understand where the state governments are going on this smoking stuff. First they pass taxes on cigarettes that are supposed to fund everything from schools to health care then they outlaw smoking everywhere?

All the smokers quit going to the races and start going to the Indian Casinos.

Last I heard, the bill being debated in Iowa included a smoking ban for outdoor arenas, which would include race tracks, I guess. I wonder what happens in the pits? Smoking banned there, too?
What gets me is that in the house bill, casinos are exempt but the senate bill supposedly includes them.
While the state makes money of the tobacco tax (as well as other taxes on alcohol, ect) there also are federal mandates to states for funding to cut consumption as well as strong lobby groups that carry weight.
I'm all for the ban...smokers have no concern for the health or rights of those who don't wish to breath that garbage. People have to act responsibly and we all know what happens when they don't...
...I wouldn't mind finding a way to curb irresponsible drinking at the track, too. It shouldn't take a law to do it though.

Number 1: People who work in bars know when they walk in that there is smoke in the bar, I would hope and can choose not to work there.
Number 2: Some bars have chosen to go non-smoking to cater to their customers, and I fully support that. Their CHOICE.
Number 3: I hope that the people who are whining about the smoke at the track don't breathe in any fumes. Next thing you know, you'll be banning that and forcing all sprint cars to be electric.

I think I could use up most of Knoxville's seating sections to make a good seating chart.
I would need sections for smokers, non smokers, non drinkers, light drinkers, alcoholics, old
people (over 70), overweight people, people who stink, families with kids, teenagers, people who think they're at a Nascar race and like to stand for everything, and people age 20-69 who don't; smoke, have kids, stink, drink, stand and are a healthy weight. Also going to need all of the combinations of the above.
Smokers and all of the combinations of smokers could sit on the back
stretch, the smoke should be disappated enough to not bother me on the
front straight. People who stink should sit with the smokers on the
back straight because the smokers most likely wouldn't be able to smell
them over the smoke.
People who like to stand for everything should be at the top of the backstretch that way they wouldn't feel like their head was going to hit the bottom of the VIP booths.
Overweight people need their own section with seats that are priced
by the inch. Somehow I always end up sitting by someone who's 5' tall
and a deuce and a half.
Light drinkers who don't smoke and stay sitting could be on the front straight. Alcoholics can go to the back.
Old people should sit towards the bottom so that they wouldn't hold up the line of people trying to get up or down the steps.
Sorry if I've offended anyone, you can find me towards the top of the section on the front stretch for; age 20-69, non smoking, non drinking, non stinking, not overweight (I'm 5'11" 175 lbs) no kids and I like to sit on the seat I paid for. Join me if you fit the requirements, otherwise find your section and sit (or stand) there

excellent point. see I smoke too. but I'm one of the minority group of smokers - that is considerate of those who don't smoke. for instance - I won't smoke right smack in the middle of stands at a racetrack. I think that is very very rude. it's people who do that - that leads to bullshit laws like this.
I mean c'mon! how hard is it at Knoxville to just get up and go stand at the top at have a quick smoke - or anywhere else to wait till intermission. It's one of those things where I feel the rest kinda give me a bad name.
But it's families with kids that are the worst inconvenience at racetracks. or should I say POTENTIAL inconvenience. most families do it the right way. when I take my 8 year old nephew to a race I make sure to. I try to put down a lil extra effort to not inconvenience fellow fans in my area.
few other practice this. it's just smokers being singled out. and I think mahy would agree that stupid or bad parents can be wayyyyy worse than smokers. To me public smokin is a double edged sword. On one hand I think smoker should be considerate - on the other - there shouldn;t eb this giant witch hint against em. it's crap. laws being passed like smokers are the leading inconvenience at public places - WTF?!?!? AT racetracks it is just stupid people that feel like once they buy a ticket they should be able to what they want the way they want - no matter the inconvenience to other ticket-payers around em. I'm 100% for smoking AREAS. The TRUE problem is the selfishness of EVERYONE.
complete ban on smoking? kiss my ass! ban alcohol if anything. people go to events and races and then DRIVE drunk! whats worse? a threat to innocent lives or an inconvenient smell? I have a big ol F*** You to any of the punk selfish fans of any sport. Whether they choke everyone with smoke - get drunk and act stupid. don't control their redneck offspring or whatever. I care much less about my nephew smellin an occasional whiff of 2nd hand smoke than I do him witnessing an entire click of 31 year olds with a combined 12 kids all under 6 gettin absolutely plastered - cussing up a storm and actin' belligerent. When you see such backasswards logic - it's a reminder of the society and country you live in. Funny enough - I don't see that at SFS (OKC) very often at all. But man you go to any other po dunk track in Oklahoma and it's like saturday night racing is for 30 year old parents what the bowling alley is for 12 year old kids.
and also - as if this ain;t long enough. smokin at a dirt track? SMOKING at a dirt track? In the last 50 years the majority of fans in the stands and pits SMOKED........even a bunch of DRIVERS as well. SMOKING and RACING go hand in hand in more ways than one. What stupidity - to enforce a ban of smoking at a racetrack but not enforce a ban of cancer causing fuel additive agents such as propylene. screw this now I'm worked up and need a smoke. damn it!

Smoking has and never did bother me til this winter. I have been around my Grandma and my Dad when they smoked, never hurt me or bothered me. I smoke a cigar every once in a while. Then this Winter it all started. I guess after working in a bar full time it finally hit me. I got a Sinus Infection. Sat and got antibodies at the FREE clinic. Then for the first time, when I smell smoke, it made me cough. I use to never care. I would sit around and talk with people blowing smoke even right in face. Never got to me. NOW all of a sudden this winter. It is just affecting the crap out of me! I was always against the no smoke ban cause it would affect my tips and customers. Yet, now, my tips are not worth my health. The only thing i can ask is for the place I work to build a nice enclosed smoking porch. Semi heated. It is going to pass and as a bartender I am not so sure I am against it anymore. I did a 180 on that in just a month. No health insurance and working in a bar with a sinus infection, you can't get rid of, will change your mind.
