Has anyone ever won a WoO race after starting last?

The hopeless desire to outrun Bud Grimm's Fords is
why central PA became the toughest place to race on
the planet. Even the KING couldn't run with Casey
Luna's Fords on a tacky track. It's a crying shame
that current car owners failed to notice.

Although probably not "Officially"won from the back since he officially started 6th, but after the turn 1 yellow flag for him on a complete restart with zero laps in the books, and he retarts at the tail, I argue Steve Kinser won this Full Point WoO A Feature from last.

Lap leaders: Brad Doty 1-21, Steve Kinser 22-30.

On the initial start, Steve Kinser bangs wheels with a competitor and found himself nose first in the turn 1 guardrail. He restarts at rear of field. Restart: Doty into the immediate lead. By the end of the first lap, Steve Kinser has already passed 6 cars. Doty continued to lead J. Swindell and Estes and by Lap-6, Steve Kinser is running 5th. Lap-8: A Red Flag Fuel Stop was called by WoO Officials due to an excessive amount of parade laps and false starts. Restart: Steve Kinser busts into 3rd by taking position from M. Kinser and Estes. J. Swindell was pushed back to 3rd after Steve Kinser takes him on the backstretch. A highly motivated Kinser begins to close in on Doty's 10 car length lead. Lap-16: Heavy traffic as Doty and Steve Kinser nose-to-tail and for a moment, Kinser edged ahead slightly. Lap-22: Steve Kinser passes Doty on the high side out of turn 4 and quickly opened a full straightaway lead. A late race yellow aided Kinser with lapped cars between himself and Doty to secure the win.

When asked about his yellow flag and restarting: Steve Kinser blamed himself for his first lap incident "I just ran it in way too hard, My car was working just so much better than the guys starting in front of me, I just ran into them."

Yes, but there were only 2 cars in the race and it was still won from the front row.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about Stanbroughs performance @ Kokomo last night. Went to the tail in the feature after a racing mishap and came back from last to win the feature. How he keeps that car on four wheels sometimes three wheels is beyond me.

In the fall of '97, Jeff came from 2nd in the B to win the A. After he transferred he got his time back which started him about 9th I believe. I still have that race on tape and it's probably one of the best of my collection.

Jeff came out of the B-Main at the Knoxville Nationals final one year and finished second and still complained in the Press Conference, lol. Steve also came from way back in Montana a few years ago, what a drive that was! I think he came from the rear at Millstream also and maybe even the Grove when sent to the rear for too many crew (they weren't his guys) over the wall, right? Take It Easy....

I was at the National Open the year Steve Kinser was penalized to the rear of the field during the lap 25 fuel stop. One of the most amazing performances I have ever seen. Kinser restarted at the rear and was leading 20-25 lap later. That was back when the National Open was still a 75-lap race.

Closest I remember (that I attended) was the 1994 Valvoline Classic @ K'ville (back when they ran twin features.

Feature #1: Steve Kinser wins ahead of Danny Lasoski (started 1st and 3rd respectively). Kinser led laps 1-21 and 23-25. Lasoski led lap 22.

Feature #2: Danny Lasoski wins ahead of Steve Kinser (started 21st and 22nd respectively) in a 25 lapper that went "non-stop". Stevie Smith led lap 1, Ryan Jamison led laps 2-14, Lasoski led laps 15-25.

One of the Greatest "Events" that the WoO ran. 2nd Feature was completely inverted from finish of the 1st feature (Except cars that dropped out or were added to the field to replace wrecked cars). Very Large Crowd (~12,000 or so--back before the suites, so they pondered opening the "new" backstretch grandstand to make room for more fans). Full points and $$$ for both features, so everyone ran hard.

Too bad they don't have "Events" like that anymore.

Just my $.02

Wasn't WoO but Haud at Osky for the backrow challange. Think there were like 4 or 5 WoO regulars in there.

The Valvoline & Iowa Ethonol Classics were great. The King swept the twin features of the Valvoline Classic when he was driving the Valvoline-sponsored car... 09/26/92. All the historic results are on Knoxville's web page, thanks to Bill W.

Check out the charges from Lasoski, Haud, the Mouse, Mark Kinser, and others... pretty awesome.

The Kinser/Lasoski battle of '94 was epic...

Dale Blaney nearly duplicated the same feat last year on the Night before the Royal by finishing 4th.

Allright so this is a wingless race so don't bust my chops too hard but the performance that Damion Gardner put on this night still lingers in my mind. I remember reading that after setting quick time, the motor was running sour in his heat and the B so the Chaffin team took a provisional for the featch.

Wasn't that at Vegas when his bro could have taken him out in 4 coming to the checker, but already had the championship locked up? If not, that night was still a great race!!!

Not WoO, but Lasoski coming from the tail of the B-Main to work his way to 4th in the A-Main in last years Knoxville Nats was something special.

Unfortunately the "indidents" in the B-main tarnished an otherwise great achievement (he still came from the back of the B to qualify). There can be no arguments about his charge in the A-main to finish 4th.

If he would have started 15th or better he would have had something for schatz I'm not saying he would have won but it would have been fun to see but hard to hear with all the booing

Danny took advantage of a lot of good luck, even if he had to make some of it himself..... Yellows in the B. Yellows and red in the A. But, he DID get it done. He was the fastest before the red. Steve was flat out bringing it. He was definitely the fastest car on the track. It would have been fun to see only a short yellow because he was on his way. Danny was nearly a half lap behind at that point. I don't know whether Steve's tire sealed over, they made a bad adjustment or everyone else just adjusted and got faster, but he wasn't the same after the red. Danny on the other hand did get better. They made a good adjustment and he was probably the fastest at the end.
