I was at this race I believe? Was this an afternoon race in the early spring? Emmett Hahn raced the #52 Zink super with them. If this is the race it was actually a year before the WoO started. This was just an outlaw race.

There coming at you in a heat race at an early spring afternoon outlaw sprint race at the the Big Tulsa Fairgrounds Speedway in 77. What a deal 4 and 5 wide groove. What a great track Tulsa was.
Taken from the grandstands. Here's one photo from the race I was referring to. Rick Ferkel on the bottom in the yellow one. The light blue one on the top was Bobby Marshall #19. The same car as above 1st row center. Ralph Parkinson Jr. is next to Rick

Have to agree with Warren , WoO was not formed until 1978 and the first race ever was at the Devils Bowl in Dallas , Tx. in the Spring of 78 , was lucky enough to be able to attend that race.

I THINK I was at the first WoO race in Wichita. What I remember is they ran without wings, and my cousin told me that if the host track's rules said wings, then the outlaws ran wings, and if they said no wings, the outlaws ran without them. I was in Great Bend early one Saturday morning (t was still cold, so it had to be in early spring) and I saw Fred Hembree in a gas station towing to a race somewhere. I wasn't a friend of his, or even really an acquaintence, but he knew who I was when he saw me. So I stopped to say hi and ask him where he was going. He said he was going to an "open" sprint car race in Tulsa. Could this be the same race you've all been discussing? I think it's cool Emmet ran his super against the sprint cars.
