DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- The Daytona 500 is a wreck before it even gets started.

A cheating scandal that had already brought down four teams now has ensnared another -- that of two-time winner Michael Waltrip -- tarnishing NASCAR's signature race and Toyota's highly anticipated debut.

"We've got people's attention now," NASCAR competition director Robin Pemberton said Wednesday.

Waltrip lost his crew chief and team director right before Sunday's Super Bowl of racing. The two were suspended indefinitely after an illegal substance was found during inspection for the season-opener.

Waltrip, docked 100 points, will be allowed to participate in Thursday's races that determine the field for the 500.

David Hyder, his crew chief, was thrown out of the garage and fined $100,000. Team director Bobby Kennedy also was kicked out.

Waltrip said he was "so sad and embarrassed" but tried to shift blame to an unidentified individual within his team.

"This is not the action of an organization, a manufacturer or a sponsor," Waltrip said in a statement. "This was an independent act done without consent or authorization from me or any of my executive management team."

Waltrip spent all day Wednesday meeting with NASCAR officials, who publicly paraded Hyder and Kennedy through the garage as they were escorted out. Waltrip's Toyota Camry was also on display as inspectors ripped pieces out from under the hood.

His team worked furiously to prepare a backup car, but it had yet to clear inspection and Waltrip got no practice time Wednesday. He will be allowed to race the backup Thursday, if it passes inspection.

Waltrip's penalties came one day after the crew chiefs for 2003 champion Matt Kenseth, Kasey Kahne, Scott Riggs and Elliott Sadler all were suspended. All five drivers also were docked points in an unprecedented move by NASCAR, which never before had taken points before the season.

NASCAR officials would not reveal what they found in Waltrip's intake manifold, but a person with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press it was a property contained in jet fuel. The person requested anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the details.

I've heard of nitro for sprint cars (The All Stars and WoO used to test the specific gravity of fuel) but never jet fuel.

When Shane Carson drove for the Rio Airways #51 of Kilpatrick and Connell owned by ex top fuel driver Richard Tharp, nitro in his tank was a common sight. Man, what an awesome smell!!!!!

I remember reading a story on the first King's Royal in Open Wheel where they mentioned how nitro was legal at that race (open comp back then) and who was using it. I remember Carson's name in that article.

the stuff that was used a few years ago at Knoxville.

I guess the stuff in very small amounts is used by the state to check the octane in gasoline.

I guess in large quantities the stuff makes unbelievable power, BUT you can't put the fire out if it catches on fire.

Toyota's "Car of Tomorrow"

Port-O-Jet, the world's only jet-powered outhouse, will heat up the action Saturday night during the inaugural CRASHCars Tournament of Thrills at The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway.

One of the most unique vehicles on four wheels, the standard-size outhouse has been fitted with a jet engine and is capable of speeds approaching 70 mph.

With designer Paul Stender strapped to the "driver's seat," Port-O-Jet will attempt to break its own world speed record for one lap around a four-tenths-mile clay oval. Port-O-Jet made its world debut at The Dirt Track in 2002 and circled the track at an average speed of 34.72 mph.

Port-O-Jet is part of a jet-powered tripleheader during the evening of motorized mayhem. Kamikaze, an ATV powered by a General Electric T-58 jet engine, will melt a compact car while the evening's grand finale will see Crunch Time, an International truck powered by a 17,000-horsepower Westinghouse J-34 jet engine, use its afterburner to turn a school bus into a pile of smoldering rubble.

Isn't jet fuel made out of Kerosene? If so does anybody on here know if there is any benefit to adding kerosene to race gas?

From CNN's front page: "This is my fault," Waltrip told reporters.

So if he's contrite enough to say it's his fault, to look so agonized, why is he still racing today? He says he considered sitting out but was talked into it by his wife. I say you can't have it both ways. Either you're blind to what happened and it was done without consent and you keep racing, or you apologize for cheating, admit it was your fault, and sit out. This "I'm so sorry, it's my fault" but continuing to participate b.s. bothers me.

He should not be racing this weekend. I think this stuff will continue to happen until NASCAR starts keeping the drivers out of competition instead of kicking the crew chiefs out.

It sounds more like this than the jet fuel which was at first talked about but has been ruled out....

Oxygenated gel for improving performance of combustion engines through improved burning of combustibles
Document Type and Number: United States Patent 6152121
Link to this Page: http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6152121.html
Abstract: A system and method for improving performance and fuel efficiency of a combustion engine by providing an oxygen enriched gel which is inserted near an air intake, where the gel is stored within a container formed from a gas permeable membrane which is sufficiently porous so as to enable the gel to gradually evaporate. The evaporating gel releases oxygen, which is drawn into the air intake, resulting in reduced emissions and improved performance of the engine. No modifications to the combustion engine are required to use the system. The gel is inexpensive, and the gel container is preferably replaced or refilled approximately as often as an oil change is performed.

Mark, I was THERE for the Schatz fire, and by there, I was within a few feet from the accident.

The fuel fire was mainly blue, the hole in the bottom of the tank was big enough to stick your leg in,

I would think the brake rotor ignited the fire, the color you see and make the accuations about, without a doubt was various oils and greases on the bottom of the car.

I have not heard of a single report of nitro smell from anyone.

The bottom line is that Brent Kaeding saved Donnies life from a lifetime of pain and agony.

With the NST/WoO deal going on, and his son being parked at the time, I am sure ANY hint of anything illegal would have been exploited by either BK, or the other NST drivers that went into the fire also.

We all know that your being critical of the fire is because of your stance with the WoO way more than any possible inside information concerning creating.

You were clear across the Nation when the accident happened, I was the closest person to the car on fire when the car came to a rest (in the red shirt)

did i say nitro? but as you said...someone can get hurt regardless of suspected funny business.

i am glad i have not seen a fire like this in person...just watched it like all the other fans who saw this footage...whatever color you see, it still burns.

Nascar finds itself in a bad PR position to have to police their own...and I'm sure they aren't the first series to have to deal with funny fuel.

Fuel additives are used all the time in all forms of motorsports

The most common additive for methanol is nitro methane but nitro propane can also be used.
Adding 1% nitro methane will gain you 1% power. So if you use 5% (1/2 gallon of nitro to 10 gallon methanol) and you have a 800HP engine you now have a 840HP engine.
A lot of drivers will kill for a extra 40 HP to qualify with.

Nitro cost $35.00 - $40.00 per gallon.

There are several additives that will cover up the smell of nitro.

Nitro is also sometimes added to the engine oil.

The old saying is you'r not cheating until you get caught.
