Battle for the Top Heats Up as Sprint Invaders Visit West Liberty!
(Bill W) July 2, 2008 – The battle at the top of the Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders point standings couldn't be closer heading into the West Liberty Raceway in West Liberty, Iowa this Saturday, July 5! Bobby Mincer and John Schulz are tied for the lead after three events, and Matt Rogerson is lurking behind by just three markers as the series heads to the facility for the third year in a row.
Mincer, who won the Sprint Invaders title in 2004, and Schulz, who was awarded a victory at the 34 Raceway near West Burlington, Iowa in May, have used consistent finishes at the front of the pack. Rogerson may be at the point of the standings at this stage, but an unlucky spin at the Morgan County Speedway while running second hampered him. Nonetheless, there is a long ways to go in the 2008 season.
2005 Sprint Invaders champion, Jesse Giannetto and the leader in all-time Sprint Invaders feature wins, Jerrod Hull, are the drivers who have previously captured wins at West Liberty. The low banked half-mile oval was host to the Sprint Invaders last in July of 2007. The race brought the crowd to its feet, with Hull coming from the 17th starting spot to battle Skip Jackson and Rager Phillips to eventually claim the win ahead of Jackson, Schulz, Josh Schneiderman and Russ Hall.
The facility located in West Liberty is known primarily as late model territory, but has held some of the best open wheel entertainment in Eastern Iowa over the years. Previous open wheel winners at the track have included Terry McCarl, Kerry Madsen, Manny Rockhold, and midget legend Dave Ray.
Hot laps get underway Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
Camfab Offers Bonus for the "Highest Finishing 305"
Camfab has offered to award a $25 Gift Certificate from Midland Performance to the "Highest Finishing 305" in each Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invader feature race.
The Sprint Invaders season opener at 34 Raceway saw 32 winged sprints take to the track in search of a qualifying spot for the A-Main. One of those cars was the #23 car piloted by young gun Kevin Hetrick. Hetrick not only qualified but was the highest finishing 305, making him the first recipient of Camfab's award. Thank you Chris McGraw and congrats to Kevin Hetrick.
