Brian Brown - McCool Runnings!
(Bill W - Special Edition) July 2, 2008 - The competition at the Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Nebraska pays attention when Brian Brown and the Tim and Gina Doogs SuperClean #21 sprint car pulls in. The team has raced eight times at the facility and won an incredible five main events. They added another last Friday night. Brian used the momentum to run a strong second from a row eight start at Knoxville on Saturday, topping off a good weekend.
The Grain Valley, Missouri driver drove from fifth to third in his heat at McCool. "We were able to draw halfway decent and get through the heat," says Brian of his run. "We were able to get to the 8-car redraw and drew four."
He quickly moved to the fore from row two. "We got the lead about the second or third lap, and ran as hard as we could for 25 laps," he says. "Anytime you can win anywhere, it's a momentum builder. It's kind of what we needed to turn our season around. We were fast and lapped some good cars at a place we love to race at."
Wins have come hard in 2008. "We've been winning 15 or so races a year, and we just haven't been on top of our game this year," says Brian. "We're not going to give up, we're going to keep on plugging away to get back where we need to be."
Brian's run at Knoxville again started with disappointment in time trials (17th quick). "Our motors aren't running the best laps for qualifying, but the fault lies with me as well," he says. "Everything and everybody needs to pull the rope in the same direction, and I'm not doing my part very well from a qualifying aspect. We'll just keep trying to get better there."
After starting on the pole of his heat and leading from green to checker, Brian lined up inside of row eight for the 25-lap Mid-Season main event. The race took no less than five tries to get going. "We kind of rolled around there in the beginning with all the cautions and reds," Brian relates. "We got going through the middle there, and I think I sealed my right rear up. We were really junk for a little bit."
Then he took off. Danny Lasoski had been sent to the rear for jumping one of the starts, and the duel with Brian began. Brian was sixth, and Danny seventh by a lap eleven restart. The two continued moving forward until Danny pulled a hard slidejob on the SuperClean #21 to take over third. That set up a final restart with two to go, that saw Billy Alley leading Mark Dobmeier, Lasoski and Brown. "On that last yellow, I figured I'd let it all hang out and see what we had," remembers Brian. "We were able to go from fourth to second, and the way we've been running at Knoxville, that's like a win."
The incredible finish was just the latest in the exciting 410 events that have been occurring on a weekly basis at Knoxville. "It's really something to build on, and maybe we can come back and win two on twin features night this week," says Brian of his second place run that was worth $3000.
