Reading Dave Argabright's "Changing Faces" column in SC&M this month I thought it would be interesting to look at who were the top 10 in points at Knoxville in 1998. Amazing to see the names of drivers who no longer race. Thanks to Knoxville Raceway.com for the stats.
410: Skip Jackson, Don Droud Jr., Terry McCarl, Brent Antill, Jayme Moyle, Leonard Lee, Scott Whitworth, Marlon Jones, Chris Walraven, Bob Weuve.
360: David Hesmer, Randy Martin, Doran Doty, Jeff Haines, Duane VanHeukelom, Bruce Williams, Steve Wares, Dwight Snodgrass, Brett Golik, Terry Alexander. (Mike Brooks 11th).
Argabright is right though. It is amazing the turnover in sprint car racing once you get to thinking about it. I looked for the 1998 WoO standings, but neither the WoO site or OpenWheelTimes had that. Pretty sad the lack of history available on the WoO site.

Competitors come and go (mostly)...but how about the turnover in the leadership of the sport over the last 5-8 years, both in the series and track positions? Many changes, new personalities and dynamics and it's not done changing yet, not by a longshot.

ONLY 5 OUT OF THE TOP 20 IN OUTLAW POINTS REMAIN ON TOUR CURRENTLY. THAT IS INCREDIBLE TO THINK ABOUT, AND ONLY 13 STILL RACE FULL TIME.

Even though many of those drivers are not driving, a few are still a part of the sport in a different way. Jayme Moyle and Lee Nelson build sprint car engines. Steve Wares, Bruce Williams, and Dwight Snodgrass are now car owners. I think former drivers are just as important as those still racing. Who knows, todays drivers could one day be the future car owners and engine builders of tomorrow.

Pretty sad the lack of history available on the WoO site.
What site are you going to?
www.worldofoutlaws.com/sprint
Scroll down to the bottom right and click on the 30th anniversary logo and there is all kinds of historic goodies.
It is nice to see something of a constant from '98, winning todays' WoO A Feature still pays $10 Grand.
Because chassis, engines, tires, fuel, etc...have not gone up in costs right?

I think Moyle works for Hoosier now, at least he is always at the trailer at Knoxville. Leonard Lee is crew chief for the wild child. Gaerte is still building motors I would assume. Does anyone know what Hillenburg and M. Kinser are up to these days.

98A..... Thanks for the helpful hint there. Boy, would it kill them to have a "History" link at the top of that page? I mean really....

You are right, Jayme does work for Hoosier at the track. He still builds engines during the week though.

I believe that Jayme's tire deal at the track is his own as part of his engine business..

Totally agree... can you imagine the amount of touring drivers they would have if the fuel prices were the same as they were back in 1998?
