Tuesdays with TMAC – Bullring and a Half!

(Bill W) April 29, 2008 – With the weather having the upper hand again last weekend, the World of Outlaws and sprint car driver, Terry McCarl, will try it again this week on a tight bullring and a big half-mile. Friday will see the series traveling to the high-banked 3/8 mile US36 Raceway west of Cameron, Missouri, and Saturday will see a rescheduled shootout at the Knoxville Raceway in Iowa! With his hat in the promotion arena at US36, TMAC is hoping for better conditions weather-wise!

The Spring weather can be frustrating to fans and drivers alike, but no one goes through more stress than a promoter. With no events having been run this season at US36 due to the conditions, it needs a lot of work after a long winter and harsh Spring. "Unfortunately, the weather has caused us havoc every year we've run there, and this has been the first race run there," says TMAC. "Normally, they'd have one or two shows under their belt by now. Larry Hillerud will be out on the track today to start preparing for Friday."

Despite limited runs at US36, TMAC did grab a win there in 2002, and has run well the last two years with the WoO. "Two years ago, we started way back (13th) and ended up third," says TMAC. "Last year we were running third, passing for second when I broke a right front shock. I ended up ninth, but about crashed everyone behind me on the restart!"

TMAC is part of the promotional team, mostly because it is fan friendly, and offers great racing action. "It's just an awesome place for a fan to see a race," he says. "The high-banks and the high-speed with the tight action…there really aren't too many tracks that have the action of a US36."

The series heads to Knoxville on Saturday. The "Sprint Car Capital of the World" has also struggled with the elements trying to get the lid lifted on their season. "The most important thing for any track is the one thing they can't control, and that's the weather," says the six-time Knoxville track champion. "Hopefully, they'll get a break this week. They have the best track prep in the country so they will be ready. Hopefully, they can get their practice in on Thursday too."

Austin and Carson Back in Action This Weekend!

While father Terry runs Knoxville, 15 year old Austin McCarl will travel back to the place where his sprint car career began just a few weeks ago. He and his grandfather and crew chief, Lenard, will return to the Eagle Raceway (NE) for their weekly racing season opener this Saturday night! They will attempt to qualify for their first feature in Janet Holbrook's #17 360 sprinter.

Austin's younger brother, Carson, will run his first race of the season Saturday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. when he takes the Micro-Sprint to the English Creek Speedway south of Knoxville. The thirteen year old set a number of quick times last year at English Creek, and despite running the track on a limited basis finished fourth in season points there.

Larry in Corning, IA asks: When you are promoting these WoO events, what are some of the things that you do and some of the costs that most people don't think about?

TMAC Answers: Like with any promotion, the fan figures with a rainout, you don't lose any money on the deal. It really depends on when the show rains out, as far as the costs involved. With an Outlaw show like we're doing at US36, there's a lot more pre-race hype and expense than there would be with a local show. We'll probably spend $10-15,000 on advertising for the show this Friday. If it rains out, that's out the window. Insurance really depends on when you open the gates, if the engines get started, you may get some of that money back. If you're halfway through the show, you may get half of your money back. There's a lot of cost, sometimes there's food that's prepared and you have to throw it out. There are a lot of hidden costs, and there's some of that behind some of the cancellations we've seen this year so far. Early cancellations have been good for us as owners and drivers with $4 a gallon for diesel. A lot of the teams based around Indy never even came this way because of the threat of weather, and they got to race with the All Stars at Eldora Saturday. There's a lot of work with promotion. Larry Hillerud will be prepping the track for Friday starting this morning at US36. I'll be there a couple days ahead of time, too. When it comes to the Front Row Challenge/Ultimate Challenge, Bill McCroskey, Lori, the kids and myself and helpers will be there ahead of time painting seats, etc. I always walk the track a couple times and make sure we pick stuff up that doesn't belong. I found a horseshoe there once! Those are some of the little things that people don't think about.

Today in TMAC History!

TMAC has a pair of fourth place finishes on this day in history with the World of Outlaws. He came close to winning his first WoO feature at Huset's Speedway (SD) in 2001, after winning his heat, running second in the dash and leading 21 of 30 laps in the main event. He settled for fourth behind Donny Schatz, Steve Kinser and Stevie Smith. In 2005, he completed a great drive at a Knoxville WoO prelim from outside row six to finish behind Danny Lasoski, Steve Kinser and Kraig Kinser. He completed the weekend with another top four run.
