Consoli is the man. What does he do to make stuff so good?

The hopeless desire to outrun Bud Grimm's Fords is 
why central PA became the toughest place to race on 
the planet. Even the KING couldn't run with Casey 
Luna's Fords on a tacky track. It's a crying shame 
that current car owners failed to notice.

I thought the photos of Levi Jones and Ricky Gaunt were pretty good personally.

And there are a few good photogs out there that are not in PA.

Tracey Talley was a really good one also.

I don't know that it's so much that the quality is gone...so much as it's not publicly available. I will say as a photographer myself that there are MAYBE 6-8 guys that shoot short track open wheel stuff that I respect. The VAST majority fail to not only display work that is well composed, well exposed, and well shot, but that shows some form of style at all. I think MOST of the photographers out there to be just glorified point and shoot chimps with better equipment. Normans mean nothing if you don't think out what you are shooting first.

I own the fact that I think 90% of the stuff I shoot is s*hit to me as well. Thats why I am goin rally racing with my rig this year. With that at least you can choose a unique spot to compose your shots....a circle track affords far less opportunities for creativity.

You are dead on about the Hockett photo though! TME...."The Magicians Eye"....I have seen his work from Arizona for several years now.....I have to give him credit for trying to shoot photos with a different style.....very slow shutter speeds....but it aint working. The end result looks horrible to me. And ya....the huge watermark on a poorly composed shot...come on! If I shot stuff that looked like that....I certainly wouldn't want my logo being clearly visible!

Oh well....to each his own! I need more vodka apparently!

I have to agree with Michael on the availability part. Most of the really good photogs do it to make a living. There comes a point where giving up your photos for "viewing" no longer nets a return. Especially when anyone with $1000 can become a photographer now.

Like Michael, I don't think my photos are all that special with the exception of the occasional headshot or action shot. Case in point, most of my stuff from FL was deplorable. I still post them in a journalistic sort of way on my site and I do provide them to those providing my credentials without question. I don't send them to places like hoseheads(although I probably should) all that much anymore. Most of the tracks have a track photographer to do that.

All that being said, your getting to view the photos for free.

you get what you pay for.....if you want to see the good stuff, send the photographer a few bucks and they will provide with some of the best photos they have taken....i dont post my best stuff on hoseheads, just like tons of other photogs i know....we just give you a little taste of what we saw over the weekend in the hopes that the public may order a photo or two....

I once read where less than 1% of sports photographers can actually make a living at it. So that means all of us do it mostly for the love of it and a chosen sport...or five!

Every shooter tries....I should hope....for a style that appeals to them. I don't think alot do though...but thats my hope. What you are seeing on the internet and on places like Hoseheads...is that more inexperienced novices are able to find exposure for their work...if you can call it that. So it's not so much that good photos are not being had...it's that more turds are floating to the surface as reasonably good equipment can be had for a few hundred dollars by people with no more talent and knowledge than Joe Public who works at Wal-Mart.

Read a good book that kinda sums up the internet's influence on the arts like photography, "The Cult of the Amateur"....I forget the writer.

I can though say that the best shooters don't often have good websites to display things. Because if nothing else...I need some inspiration myself at times. New ideas....thoughts....perspectives.

The main problem with fans and sponsors and of course racers being able to obtain QUALITY IMAGES, is this: There are a zillion people out there that have spent a thousand bucks or two and that made them pro photogs instantly, no training, no background, let alone, no talent. These are the people who want a free pit pass, get into the races for free, then never ever do much to pay the sport back, other than give away sub-standard photos, so they can get in the pits again next week for a free ride. Its, a growing problem. If you dont believe me, ask good friend, Randy Jones, one of the best sprint car photogs in our era. Jones will tell you the real smak down on this very issue. Al Consoli is yet another great person who knows the business and how it has changed so dramatically since the age of digital and why there are hundreds of not thousands of good people, who just want a free ticket, so they go do the American Dream, buy a mid range camera, a lens and two battery flash, and then WHALA.... YOU GET WHAT YOU GET.......

You guys can say what you want but there are a whole bunch of us out here that are still amazed and thrilled at the amount of pictures we can see from all over the county from every major track, on the Internet. It wasn't all that long ago when open wheel and other publications were the only place to see some photos of recent races etc. Water spots? I had a few myself out there. LOL Heck man, we looked forward to pictures on newsprint! Say what you want about the "inexperienced novices" as you call them, but even Al Consoli was one once. Go ahead, go "rally racing with my rig this year" and find the "unique spot to compose your shots". Have fun, we'll be just fine. LOL

This argument has been around since Blackplate Photography Boardtrack Racing, Doubleday when He was a photographer before a Publisher, a Relative used to hang with Him, Will Rodgers and Barny Oldsfield, Doubleday used to complain about the same-new formats. Ever hear Blueray-HD Hello???? Try an anolog $60,000 A/B roll editing System, TV cameras with $5,000 lens obsolete overnight, You will get over it. I have the Highest regard for Mr Consoli, Johns racing and beginers.The only thing permanenate is change. Its not the size of Your weapon, how You use it. Any shooter wether moving or stills, has an obligation to provide feed to Local Stations, or stills to Your Local Newspaper, its not all about making Money, its about fillng the Stands with New fans.Sure, i use a $540 Camera and give to Widows and family members, whom may Never seen Their Relatives race, The smile on Their face has no price tag,does that make Me untrained? hardly, was trained by the best in the World, vmi inc and former Meridian Communcations so a lot of wide brush painting here, un-nessarily. Go Shakti, see her while You can,LOL
