Did Hagen run into Darland, or did Darland run over Hagen?
For those who can download the Copper sprint car clip at millsvideoproductions.com, whose line was it anyway. I read that Hagen got thumpped on the helmet, by Darland's son Trenton, for causing the accident. It is a very close call but it looks like Darland drove over Hagen to me. What say you?
It was a very hard ride for DD and I am glad he is OK.
And thanks to Mills for more great coverage. By the way I have the 2007 Sprint and Midget Week DVDs and they are awesome, race after race after race. All good stuff.

Without seeing the previous lap or two, you cannot say from the video if Hagen changed his line this lap or if he even knew DD was there.
But like the others have said, it looks like a racing deal to me- no blame, no foul. But if Trenton Darland did confront Darren, then Trenton Darland should be asked to stay out of the pits for a few shows. No room for any confrontation in this instance....

I was listening to Hagen's interview on the USAC show and watching the video as he talked about it. He had no idea that Darland was coming up out there and said he felt better about the deal after he saw the video of it. He also stated that he had no hard feelings about Dave's son getting emotional. He did add that the people on the Indiana Sprint forum should get there facts straight before they started poping off. If I'm not mistaken I think he said one of Dave's relatives started posting untrue facts. No, not his son.
It sure looked like a move that Leland used to make and yes, it's a dangerous one at that track and Darland knew the riskes involoved.
What I was impressed with was how tight Darland stayed in that car. He came cartwheeling past me and I could look right in the cockpit as it was facing towards the fence and his head was straight and firm and both hands down.

It about 1/4 up from bottom center of the home page, or click on video clips button and it is first up.

looking at the video, here's my take on it...
Hagen had been running the bottom (Klepper said so) and he go into the slick coming off of four.
Darland had jumped the cushion slightly and had to pinch the car a little more than he would have liked coming off of the corner.
End result...they both ended up in the same part of the track. No ones fault...

Didn't see anything worth the trouble stirred up about it.

Darland shoulda lifted. I'm surprised he didn't. It almost makes me wonder if his vision was obscured on his left side. I saw it before seeing this debate and thought "WTF Darland? Stevie Wonder coulda seen that one coming...." Both his and Rodella's were pretty spectacular deals. They both ended about as well as you can expect for a wreck on a straightaway as fast as Manzy's.

I was standing outside turn 4 when the crash occured and never saw it the sun was low in turn1 don't know if that had anything to do with it just thought I'd mention it.

This is a good point. I too was standing near the fence in turn 4 (with ROB actually) looking down the front stretch toward turn one, and the glare from the sun was so great I could just barely see that someone was flipping. DD might have had trouble seeing exactly where Hagen was, hence the uncharacteristic move for Darland to drive over the wheel. Who knows? But could be.

One thing that happened that most people didn't notice was.......
Darland actually hit the flagman's hand as he was waving the red flag! The flag wound up sitting on the front straight! As for the flagman's hand.........
He's lucky he still has it!!!!

IMO I still think that Hagen did not hold his line. Of all the cars working the bottom, they were not drifting up to the wall as close as Darren had that lap. I bet DD was in the same frame of mind and therefore had the trust of a fellow competitor. All in all a scary flip was the result of a racing accident. Also I think the assistant flagman got hit by a piece of Darland's car when he was flipping, because he hauled ass down the ladder even before DD came to a stop.........probably to change his underware! ! !

OK, my last words on this, I promise. Like I said, Leland used to come from up there when the groove would get that high before they changed the banking a little a few years ago. It would make the hair on the back of my neck stand up because of the guys running below had to keep their line. What happened to Dave was not something I was looking to see. I never did, not with just two cars.
Of course in those day's it was not that uncommon to see people up there running like that. That was the highest I've seen the groove in 4 in some time.
