Oh man do I remember that one! I wasn't there but I had to deliver some pictures to Turner at his house and he was all excited. "You gotta see this one!" he goes. One of the things that impressed me the most on that deal was that the push truck in the push-off lane was able to see him coming and had the presence of mind to throw the truck in reverse and get out of the way which saved him from certain damage. I'm a little surprised you didn't show the footage you got from your swivel chair on the infield scaffold as that was the clearest shot of it - you were right on him (it was YOUR in-car after all). I told Paul McMahon that Turner said something broke on the car and caused the flip. His response was "Something always breaks when that guy flips!" That wreck had it all - speed, altitude, rotation, distance, & fire - and he actually NAILED the landing :-)!
boy, i was standing in the pit stands with mike sargent, and when randi took off flipping and the thing caught fire i remember mike saying "oh no". we both took off running but there was no way for us to get to the car as we were trapped in the pit stand area. not that we could have done anything, but it is just a natural instinct to react when you see a friend in trouble. i remember when mike had the fire at baylands, i took off running for the car as he started flipping. i was at the edge of the track just as a car went by and lit the fuel on fire from it's exhaust. the next thing i knew i was on the track next to mike as he came out of the car putting out the fire on his leggs with my hands.we were sure glad that randi was ok.
