That was the "last" San Jose Mile and I was there taking pictures the day after my junior prom. That was the year before they were going to pave the mile. Funny thing is I shot the "last" San Jose Mile twice :-). If I remember correctly Bubba Shobert (sp?) won this one.

Ok. I just watched that. Brought tears to my eyes. You coudn't see that race from the infield. The fact that Bubba didn't buy the boards in turn two is amazing by itself - something I didn't remember and probably didn't see. Coming back to win puts him in a completely different orbit. Amazing! Earlier that day during a heat race I was standing on the front straight and a pack of those guys came by. One guy turned around and flipped off the guy behind him. On his bike. Going - like what - 140 MPH? I looked at the guy next to me in disbelief and we both exchanged a look of "UFB". I'm a huge sprintcar fan but the guys that rode those bikes were really something else.

Damn! I think I was there that day following Keith Day. Ronnie had told me the night before that his bro would be riding and that was reason enough for me and Jenni to attend our first bike race.
Three wide down the back... new leader virtually every lap! AMA knew how to put on a show!

You were there Top. They had the Don Chapin Construction trailer that Ronnie's sprint team operated out of in the infield that day. I'm pretty sure Ronnie was still recovering from his broken neck at that point.

Yep, that was it Chris. Ronnie didn't have the halo but was still wearing a brace if I remember correctly. Afterword, Jen and I hung out at the trailer and Ronnie introduced us to Keith. We had a good time that day.
Still have a #12 Don Chapin hat with hand painted pin attached. Both in mint condition. (They actually belong to WifeWing, lol)
