Last time I talked to former Late Model and 360 Sprint Car driver Jim Bruggeman his company, Elite Transporters, was building John Force's transporters. They're the official transporter of NHRA.

Man that's hard to see. I'm not real big on drag racing but I LOVE John Force. A memory involving him and the World of Motorsports Show years ago will always be with me. The time I got to spend around Force during those two weeks made me a lifelong fan of his. When you talk about people who "get it" in terms of who really pays the bills in Motorsports very few "get it" as well as John. His dominance of the sport really has little to do with how much race fans adore him. The news that he will be OK is great but I get emotional just thinking about the alternative. Especially with everything Force Racing went through when we all lost Eric. This dirt racing fan sends out my best wishes to the King of straight line - John Force - and family.

Looks like to me that when Bernstein hit the center line it spit the red markers into Forces car and he blew a tire. Anyone else see it that way?

Drag racing's biggest star, 14-time NHRA POWERade champion John Force, suffered a left broken ankle and wrist in a nasty top-end collision Sunday with fellow NHRA legend Kenny Bernstein in the second round of eliminations at the O'Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals at Texas Motorplex outside of Dallas. Force was airlifted to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas for further treatment.
Their Funny Cars got together just after they crossed the finish line. The numbers, although unofficial, showed Force crossing with a 4.863 at 315.34 mph to Bernstein's 4.904 at 312.06 mph.
Update: 6:20 p.m. Sunday: Doctors updated John Force's family and team following a thorough evaluation of his multiple injuries and the prognosis for a full recovery is very good.
Force sustained a broken left ankle and severe abrasion on his right knee. Force's left wrist also was dislocated and broken and he sustained some severe abrasions and slight fractures on a number of fingers on his right hand.
Throughout all procedures Force was alert and responsive. CAT scans performed came back negative and showed no damage other than the injuries to his legs and hands. Surgeons will begin cleaning a number of his injuries tonight and possibly setting his fractures if the swelling is at an acceptable level.
Prior reports:
Team spokesman Dave Densmore initially reported Force's injuries to the media. "He was asking to talk to Laurie, his wife, and Ashley and Robert Hight, so that was a good sign," Densmore said. "He is in a lot of pain, obviously. They can't take passengers on the helicopter so the family is off to the hospital in a car."
"John has very serious injuries to his hands, his legs, and his feet that will require extensive work-up and treatment," said NHRA doctor Dwight Shewchuk, who was first on the scene with the Safety Safari. "Nothing appears life-threatening at this time but he certainly has significant injuries so he's been taking to Baylor Hospital where he'll be further evaluated.
"Although he was alert and conscious throughout the whole thing he was demonstrating some signs of a concussion as he was asking the same question over and over. But his vital signs were stable and he's on his way."
Daughter Ashley Force, who won her second-round race with Del Worsham, opted not to compete in the semifinals.
Said Bernstein, who was not injured in the incident, "First of all I just pray that John's going to be okay," Bernstein said. "I know he's hurt and the main thing I'm praying for is that he gets 100-percent recovery. That's more important than anything right now for me, Sheryl, and our team. I know he was talking to me there and he was asking if he hurt me. That's typical John right there. He'll be okay. He's a strong-willed man, he'll be fine."
NHRA.com will provide more information on this breaking story as it becomes available.

Those cones are just foam blocks with the timing and scoring instruments in them. I really have a hard time believing that's what caused it.
I would venture a guess on the fact that the frame just broke or fatigued right in front of the drivers compartment. It really looks like something mechanical with Force's car. Maybe not though. They have had problems with the tires.
Good thing this isn't nascar, or some red neck hillbilly would be sending bill Simpson more death threats as well as threats to Kenny Bernstein.
Get well soon J.F!

Looking at it again, and again, I would say he shredded a tire. It seems as if in just about all forms of motorsports the HP has overcome what the tires are capable of!

i dont think it was a cone but maybe the timing lights inside the cone but that tire blew when something from bernstein hitting them hit Jonhs car as for the car being fatigued and breaking those cars are designed to come apart like that to get the engine away from the driver

from the camera at the starting line, you can see something shoot very high into the sky then out of the camera's view. it is odd to think that tires ripping apart would separate a tubular frame like that, but weirder things have happened.
it was such a mess that the TV cameras lost track of wher John actuallty was as the wreck took place.

Those foam blocks in the middle of the track only have reflectors on them, there is nothing inside of them. Did you see the speed of the foam block that went behind Forces car??? If the other one hit his tire when that tire is under the stress of all that horsepower I can understand how it exploded. Also, I don't think the car broke apart till after it hit the wall. Like stated above, those cars are meant to come apart and take energy away from the drivers compartment.

Force's car was ahead of Bernstein. How is your theory even possible ? The angle of the video may make it look like it hit his car but it had to of gone behind it. Just a coincidence that his tire blew at the same time.

impossible......... the cone would have had to be travelling 400+ mph to go forward and across the track to hit Force's car in a millisecond.

I dont' think the tire blew. Although one is flat you can clearly see both still on the car when they turn it over. And the cockpit did not hit the was until it was seperated from the front half. It is possible they exploded a transmission. I am sure within a couple of days it will come out what caused the car to break apart.

Wasn't it a piece of foam that brought the space shuttle down in pieces??

Those orange blocks are about one foot square, with only a reflector stuck to each side...the timing equipment is on the OUTSIDE of the retaining walls. They ARE made out of foam, but at 300+ mph....might as well be a concrete block. Kinda like falling off water skis at 50 mph, that water feels like asphalt for the first hit or two.......
There are TWO of those blocks at the finish line 66 feet apart. As Bernstein hit the first one, it went flying almost too fast to see. The 2nd one went behind Force's car after he clipped it.
I can't tell from the video if the first one hit anything on Force's car or not. I kinda think it didn't because you can see the LEFT side of the rear wing come apart first, then the RIGHT rear tire blows....at that point, Force was nothing more than a passenger.
Those tires are 17 inches wide sitting still - roughly the same size as a right rear on a Sprinter - but much stiffer compound....obviously. At the finish line, I think the contact patch on one of those tires is around 9-10 inches wide. The tires are at their limit.
For a while, the weak link on one of those cars was the clutch management system. When they started making 5000-6000HP, they were passing the clutch technology. Now they've got clutch management systems to handle 7000HP and the tires are now the weak link.
It was defenitely a blown tire that caused Force to cross over, but they're still trying to figure out if something hit it or if it just came apart under stress. In the video, when they turned the cage over, you can clearly see the right rear is GONE.
I talked to a friend of mine today who works for Force and he told me they ended up putting pins in his ankle and his wrist, and that his wrist wasn't broken, only severly dislocated. The teams went back to the Indy shop, crew chiefs stayed in Dallas, along with several drivers.
Force is a tough old bird and he'll be back. I wonder if he's still giving serious thought to having all 3 of his daughters in Funny Cars though.....
