Manzanita Speedway

The Sherman/Davis show may have become a thing of the past in the Discount Tire American Sprint Car Series as Jeremy Sherman has gone on a tear after Charles Davis Davis inched close to the points lead a few race back. Now, after Davis crashed for the third time this year, including one at Tucson last week, Sherman has put together four straight main event wins. Davis was the first to get to four wins but that is still his total while Sherman has a total of seven wins and that translates into a nearly insurmountable 84 point lead over the 1996 & ‘98 Arizona champion. Sherman is on track to become the first sprint car driver to win four consecutive driving titles. The American Sprint Car Series awards the winner of a race four points more than the runner-up. After that there is only a two point drop for each position.

Sherman has finished all 15 races in the top ten with five top fives going with his seven wins. Davis has also finished 12 races in the top five but failed to finish the other three. He finished 16th in the 17 car field in Tucson but it would have been worse if there had been a full 24 car field for the feature.

Davis is still in the chase for his third title but if Sherman continues to finish races he can take the title regardless of what his nemesis does. The ASCS is at the midpoint of its 30 race season and Sherman could hit the tough luck that befell Davis in the first 15 races of the year.

Thirteen of the final 15 races will be held at Manzy with seven of the races plus the three run during the Western, scheduled to becontested on the 1/3rd mile track The cars will run on the half mile track in the Anniversary race (August 23), the Hall of Fame Vintage Classic (September 20) and the Buddy Taylor Memorial (October 18)

The Winged ASCS sprinters will be on the half mile track September 26 &27 while the non winged sprinters compete on the short track.

The sprint cars will be sharing the one third mile track Saturday night with the Arizona Mini Sprints which are headed by Kiley Fellers who holds a commanding 365 point lead over Josh Castro with Josh Shipley anodther 50 points in arrears.

This week’s "Friday Night Madness" will be provided by Sport Modifieds, Factory Stocks and Bombers. Although rookie driver Garrett Funk failed to get his usual win in last week’s Sport Modified race, he still holds a more than comfortable points lead over the field with last week’s winner Chris Rhien 76 points in arrears. Bobby Taylor almost got his second straight clean sweep in the SCRA Factory Stocks last week but his second place finish in the feature and wins in both the trophy dash and his heat race allowed him to stretch his two point lead to a more comfortable 33 edge over Lyle Askren, winner of last week’s main event.

The bombers do not run for points and the main events are usually wide open affairs with no yellow flags used unless a driver needs assistance or a spinning car has the driver’s door facing the on coming traffic.

Race time each night is set for 7:30 and the front gate opens at 6:00 P.M. The usual "happy hour" with half priced beer runs until the first race is on the track.
