The cars may seem a bit primitive by today's standards, but man, we sure saw some good racing in the 80s.
A bit primative yes, but the class really featured some great racing and good rivalries. Those were my all time favorite class of race car. There was so much diversity in the chassis, body style and wings it just made it really cool. Much different look than today's cookie cutter sprints where only the paint distinguishes them. It was a sad time when the sprints finally displaced the old supers.

There were 2 #7s that Night, Kirk Sargent?
i called mike. he said he can't remember who he let drive the other car. but mike can't remember much of the 80's anyway lol. he hasn't seen pics but it may be mike pirnik. in '87 kirk was about 11 years old. by the way bruce that was not me in the vid. in 87 my waist was smaller and my hair was longer. hell i was smaller than mike then. it looks like jack smart working on the #7 sprinter. is that paul bender jr. leaning on the 7x left rear?

Scott Murry?
Indeed good times @ San Jose.............. I started in 1979 & I was a huge Mike Sargent fan.......... 9 years old wearing my Sargent sweatshirt & hat................ I got boo'd from the car to the track & all night long! lol. Went every Sat. until 83 when we started heading to Baylands......
1987........ wasn't that the year Kinser debuted the "Coat Hanger" Gambler @ the Sept. Outlaw show?????? Won the deal & I remeber thinking how the chassis remind me of a Silver Crown car..
Speaking of diverse cars.......... I remeber Chargin' Chuck Miller in his yellow V6 powered modified.......no mistaking that whine. Dwayne Larson in his Buffalo chasiss............ the list goes on.... I miss those days.
I go back to Tully Road. Bill Scott, Howard Kaeding, Clyde Palmer, Johnny Brazil, Al Pombo, Mike Dameron, a young Nick Rescino and a young Mike Sargent. Kaeding and Rescino had some terrific battles. The split from NASCAR and the start of the Golden State Racing Association. The move to the fairgrounds. Altamont Speedway and Baylands. Great looking super modifieds.

Given that I was always a fan of Lloyd Beard and Nick Rescino, I was probably one of the guys booing you Favor Boy! Since I am only a few years older than you, I guess that was okay though. Can't say I remember the V6 car, but I do remember Chuck Miller, Rich Voss, Scott Murray, Tom Henry, Mike Parker, etc. Those were really great times.
I remember it really got interesting in 1980 when Rescino, Viel, & Perry showed up after the closing of West Capital and changed the game.
Anyone remember the year BK showed up with that Flammer PE build 69 and just spanked 'em for the whole year?
Mike let Tom Henry drive his car in either 79 or 80. Can't remember if it was the #99 or the #1. Mike was probably suspended or something. Throttle stuck on Tom as he ended his qualifying lap. Back then they exited by turn one of the half mile. Tom climbed on the brakes, spun it around, and hit a parked van. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
Favorboy...I don't remember Chuck in a V6. Kent Miller maybe? Dan Clarke drove a very weird looking 6 banger.
Some names from the fairgrounds days. Ernie Rose. Ron Wipperman, Rich Voss, Jim Telfer, Don Klock. Paul Dias, Red Huckaby.
Pombo, Palmer, and Scott were a tad before my time but the last couple years at the paved track were some good days. Anybody remember Pat Rose running and orange car with a white number 13 in 76? He only ran a couple of races that year. Came back in 77 as the number 81 because Barkhimer wouldn't let him run the unlucky number 13. How about the #31 of Joey Iacobitti? I hear Pops was on the crew. 1976 State Champion Chuck Christian. Ed Hopper. Danny Haulot. Pete Dalla. Jerry Thompson.
If I had to pick a best looking race car ever..Hands down, it would be the from 1977, the #7, Frankie Luongo, Willard Radiator Works Special driven by Mike Sargent.

As far as I'm concerned there will never be a car more beautiful than the one Nick is pictured in above. All of Mike's cars were nice looking, well up until that Lightning he had at least, but that modified there was the ultimate IMO. Mike won the '86 championship with that car in what, at the time, was the closest points race in the history of the speedway with a five point margin over Jim Perry Jr.

thanks to jim and greg olson for paint and to jack hageman for the tin work and bob mutsenberg for the lettering mike had some good looking cars in that era. the 1977 willard radiator #7 with mike dwyte (spelling?) paint and lettering by i believe jerry hienrich was still the bad ass of them all.
