2008 Wilmot Speedway, Wilmot Wisconsin Season Opener Saturday, May 10th
410 Wilmot Outlaw Sprint Division
First Heat Race (10 Laps) 1. Mike Kertscher [4]; 2. Todd Hepfner [3]; 3. Todd Daun [7]; 4. Scott Lenz [2]; 5. Tim Cox [5]; 6. Jim Lukey [1]. DNF-Darrell Dodd [6]; DNF-Dave Maynard [8]. DNS-Dan Shepherd.
Daun makes a return to Sprint Car competition after hiatus. Lenz into the early lead over Kertscher through turns 1-2 until Kertscher takes the point out of turn 2 around Lap-3. Next time around, Dodd gets squirrelly through turn 4 and falls to the tail before ducking pit side. Lap-5: Yellow is out after Maynard half-spins to a stop against the tire barrier in turn 4 and was also done for the Heat. Daun takes the 4th spot on the restart from Cox as Hepfner disposed of both of them into 2nd. Lukey stalls on the high side of turn 4 for the final caution of this heat soon after. Daun takes another position on the restart as Kertscher and Hepfner make a their own race in closing laps.
Second Heat 1. Tim VanDerVere [3]; 2. Kris Spitz [4]; 3. Scott Semmelman [1]; 4. Mike Dubs [6]; 5. Kirk Fehrman [7]; 6. Jeremy Schroeder [5]; DNF-Tommy Sexton [2]; DNS-Adam Schroeder.
Sexton wins the 3 corner drag race taking the lead through turns 3-4 over defending WOS champ Semmelman and VanDerVere. Semmelman smacks the backstretch wall and falls to about 4th around the second lap. By about half-way the field was single file and no positions were seriously being challenged. Lap-8: Race-long leader, Sexton suffers from some issue and ducks off the banking above turns 1-2, done not only for the heat, but the night.
Feature (20 Laps) 1. Scott Lenz [3]; 2. Todd Hepfner [6]; 3. Scott Semmelman [5]; 4. Tim VanDerVere [9]; 5. Mike Dubs [4]; 6. Todd Daun [7]; 7. Mike Kertscher [10]; 8. Kris Spitz [8]; 9. Jeremy Schroeder [12]; 10. Jim Lukey [11]; DNF-11. Kirk Fehrman [2]; DNF-12. Darrell Dodd [13]; DNF-13. Dan Shepherd [14]; DNF-14. Tim Cox [1]. DNS-Tommy Sexton, DNS-Adam Schroeder.
Light sprinkles and obvious weather issues forced track officials to get this thing started at around 8:20 PM. The start is quickly red flagged after youngster Cox and Fehrman battle low through turns 1-2 for the lead ending with Cox tagging the infield tire barrier getting upside down. He was Ok, but done. The restart was waved off for a shaky start, but once the green is back out Lenz with the lead over Fehrman, Dubs and Hepfner. The yellow is out after one lap when Hepfner spins to a stall battling for the second spot using the high line of turn 4. 4 Laps off the restart Lenz was still leading Fehrman, Dubs, VanDerVere, Semmelman and Kertscher when Fehrman spins in turn 1. Shepherd ducks pit side under the caution. Lenz is catching the tail end of the field as Kertscher is challenging Dubs for the second spot around the half-way point as Dodd calls it a night, Hepfner is back up into the Top-5. Kertscher had just taken that 2nd spot until Fehrman loses the handle and gets way sideways out of turn 4 as Lenz dodges, Kertscher is pinched nowhere to go and stops against the stalled machine. Fehrman is done of the night. Kertscher restarts at the tail. Dubs make attempts for the lead after the restart using the low line, but Lenz holds as Hepfner takes the 3rd spot using mostly the high line very well. Lap-17: No major changes until Hepfner takes the 2nd spot low in turn 1 and was certainly on the charge for the leader, but even with Lenz making a slight gaffe against the backstretch wall caused him no mind as he had a nice advantage cut down and possibly saved by the checkered flag. Hepfner was clearly the class of the field.
Lenz busts out some celebratory Chesson’s within the infield and graciously thanked his crew which among them was the Hot Rod, Kurt Winker.
This Saturday 17th, the IRA is on the Wilmot track for the Wayne Daun Memorial.
