Opener will honor McCluskey, Brown

Manzanita Speedway will open its 2007 season by unveiling the Copper, an open wheel United States Auto Club tripleheader the racetrack hopes will become a signature event.

The Copper is scheduled for Feb. 9-10. Highlighting the card will be the track debut of the USAC Silver Crown Series, which will be staging the first race of its season. National and Western midgets also will open their season at Manzanita, and completing the lineup will be the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars.

The weekend will be in memory of Roger McCluskey of Tucson and Gene Brown ofPhoenix, two of Arizona's most popular and prolific drivers.
Race organizer Dennis Wood began the original Copper World Classic at Phoenix International Raceway in 1978. The feature races will be 30 (midget), 40 (sprint) and 50 (Silver Crown) laps. Tickets are expected to go on sale in about two weeks.

"We're really excited about bringing the Silver Crown cars to Manzanita," Wood said. "In addition, being able to salute the memory of Roger McCluskey and Gene Brown, it is a tribute to two of America's all-time greats with the kind of competition they liked the most - open-wheel racing on the dirt."

The Copper World Classic will be given a higher profile at PIR in 2007 with a slot in the November NASCAR weekend lineup. It will feature the new version of the Silver Crown cars and midgets.

USAC President Rollie Helmling said he expects the Manzanita event to succeed.

"It's a great time for our fans and participants to go west, and we expect great car counts and fantastic competition on what is regarded as one of this country's most competitive dirt tracks," he said in a press release.

I for one am glad to see that Dennis Wood is behind this effort, as USAC, P.I.R. and I.S.C. have all but destroyed what used to be a great and exciting event, the "Copper World Classic"! What a fun and fullfilling weekend that used to be, spend three days at P.I.R. watching USAC midgets, "real" Silver Crown cars, and the Supermodifieds, and then cruise over to Manzy on Fri. and Sat. night to watch USAC sprint cars! Four different openwheel divisions,on both asphalt and dirt, all on the same weekend! Shame on you USAC, P.I.R. and especially I.S.C. for destroying a great traditional grass roots event!!!

Copper World Classic at Phoenix Intl Raceway will actually move to November

Phoenix International Raceway President Bryan R. Sperber has announced that the annual Copper World Classic will be held under the lights at PIR in November, beginning in 2007. Through 29 years, the classic race weekend, featuring both the Silver Crown and Midget cars from the United States Auto Club (USAC) Series, has seen some of today's brightest NASCAR stars emerge, including Tony Stewart, Carl Edwards, Kasey Kahne and Ryan Newman. The 2007 Copper World Classic is scheduled for Thursday, November 8.

In front of its largest audience ever, the 2007 Copper World Classic will run under lights for the first time at PIR. The November race date will allow USAC drivers and teams to showcase their talent in front of NASCAR fans and race teams. In addition to Phoenix International Raceway, the USAC series is paired with the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series events at the Chicagoland and Kansas Speedways.

"Moving the Copper World Classic to November is a great stage on which to start an exciting weekend of motor sports here in the Valley," said Sperber. "Running the Silver Crown and Midget Series' under the lights is going to be a unique experience for drivers as well as a tremendous show for the fans."

USAC was founded in 1955 and currently operates 19 series of automobile racing and annually sanctions and conducts 250 events. In addition, USAC Properties Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of USAC, conducts land speed record trials and automotive testing for many leading manufacturers in the United States. USAC is a member organization of the Automobile Competition Committee of the United States (ACCUS-FIA), which provides a direct link with the International motor sports governing body, and FIA, and in that capacity serves as the host nation organizing club for the United States Grand Prix.

"It's great to know Copper World is taking on a new look and moving to the fall," said USAC President/CEO Rollie Helmling. "Phoenix and USAC racing have a strong heritage and our fans and racers always enjoy PIR. It will be great to continue to be part of Copper World and this fabulous racing weekend."

Like I said in my earlier post, the "Copper World" is all but destroyed! The term "grass roots" is just that, weekend warriors that work during the week, so they can go race on the weekends. The "Copper World"was the biggest grass roots race of the year for the midgets, champ cars, and supermodifieds, their "Indy 500" if you will, where average joe could race side by side with the best openwheelers in the Country! It was a place to go when the bitterness of winter had a lock on most of the Nation, but the "Valley of the Sun" was paradise! It was great to go and see the new teams, drivers, and crews strut their stuff! The downward spiral started happening when the supers got booted for the IRL. What a joke that was! The race dates got bumped into March, the prime time of the season in Phoenix, and hotel, rental car, and dining were at their peak prices! Big losers? The FANS!At the same time, P.I.R. quit working with Manzy and the big losers were again the FANS! It didn't work, the IRL got the boot, and the race and the dates were revered back to what they had been. I for one, will never attend another "Copper World" after attending the event for ten years!(and I am not the only one) Now USAC apparently feels that it has to latch on to the coat tails of NAPCAR to be successful, when in reality they have stood on their own throughout the years! Is it the money? Is it political? Are they getting pressure from I.S.C.? Are they scared because NAPCAR is in the spotlight and their not? Probably all of the above! With all of the well known drivers that USAC has spawned, I think that they have the ball in their court, and should make a name for themselves again(like it used to be) and not follow in the shadows of NAPCAR, or the France family.Come on USAC, you are the premier dirt and asphalt openwheel sanctioning body in the Nation, and you have always been about, and were built on tradition, so don't go and change that now....

PRA runs the old USAC PAVEMENT Silver Crowns on ASPHALT. BORING! Go once to say you've been.

USAC runs the Zambonis on Asphalt. REALLY BORING! Go once to see how USAC has screwed up yet again!

USAC, in some of it's RARE moments of Lucidity, still runs the DIRT Silver Crown cars on DIRT. These are the only shows worth going to MORE THAN ONCE! They are also WAY BETTER on the MILES!

Well said! Living in N.Nevada-N.California area, I looked forward to the Sacramento mile every year. That was a cool event. I sure miss it! Another USAC tradition gone....
