I would love to know if anyone remembers Bob racing in California
and elsewhere. Here is part of the obit as it appeared in the Medford
Mail Tribune.

Robert (Bob) Louis DeJong
Bob passed away on Friday, November 24, 2006 with friends and family at
his side in Gresham, Ore. Bob, 73, was born in Berkeley, Calif., on
December 23, 1932 to Jerry and Gladys DeJong. Bob enlisted in the US
Coast Guard in 1951 and served during the Korean War. Following his
service in the military he was a member of the Sheetmetal Workers Union
in California. Moving to Oregon, Bob became a partner in Crater Lake
Marine starting his life long career in boat repair. Although Bob was
always good at his work, it was clearly secondary to his love of
driving race cars. Bob became a member of USAC and BCRA as a driver of
sprint cars, midgets, and Indy cars. After a successful racing career,
Bob received the honor of being inducted into the BCRA Hall of Fame. |

When i was young i seen Bob DeJong race several times with BCRA. He was an excellent driver that drove the midgets on both dirt and pavement. He won the BCRA indoor midget championship one year in the late 60's, these races were held weekly on saturday nights (pavement) at the Oakland Auditorium during the fall and winter months. He drove sprint cars on the NARC circuit and on occasion with CRA at Ascot in the 60's and yes he did win Main Events at Ascot racing against some of the best in the country. In the 70's he won some main events running with the WMRA (Washington Midget Racing Association). He drove for many different car owners, one of those owners was Art Shanoian whose sprint car and midgets were top rides in Norcal in the 60's and early 70's... R.I.P. Bob. You were a good one.
