hey its ty, byron just won the make up show at fremont, got ivy with two to go. Lee lived up to his "snowman" nickname by destroying the soft walls in turn one and Rodney Morgon did a end over end in turn two, got hung up in the fence and bailed out, fell about 10 feet to the soft wall and bounced off that to land on his back. So thats the update from Fremont.

Swamp, so how was the track over all. Was it really dusty like the Aprill WoO show but more groves to the wall? Is there an apron around the bottom now?

Please lets us know!!!!!!lol

Congrates to Stewart, Jr, & the team. Might be a team to look at for rest of the summer.

track was dusty, thankfully the wind was blowing to the west, and pushed it away from the grandstands. Top 3 were right on the fence, the highside fence, so it was good to see some rim riding. Looks like they are getting the track figured out. LOT of downtime to water, maybe 4 or 5 times, and WHY must we sit through 4 heats of stocks and 4 heats of mods, then the all-star dash, then 4 bmains for stocks and mods before we see the feature. No bmain for sprints so we must tolerate almost 2 hours of mods and stocks, between sprint heats and the feature.

I took four kids with me, 2 were first time visitors, and they were very frustrated with the downtime, and all the mod and stock races. Half the grandstand left with us right after the sprint amain, why not run the amain between the mod and stock bmains and let those of us (50%) there for the sprints get the hell out of there. Last week they ran just mods and stocks at Eldora and I wasn' within 30 miles of the place. I've tolerated those things about as much as I can, and when you go to Eldora, you get a double dose of the junk.

If you dont like the Eldora stocks and mods, something is wrong with you. 3 and 4 wide racing. Eldora's support classes are some of the best anywhere.

I saw some sweet Eldora slidejobs, some great side by side racing, some SPEED, and no huggy pole racing...so all in all I was pleased with the track!!! Hats off to the Eldora crew - told you all they'd get it right - just needed some time.

Good thing Earl came over to show them how to do it (the truth, no rumor). Hopefully they learned something or he will come over every week, either one is good. The feature was like an old Eldora feature. Slick and on the wall. You could pass anywhere on the track.

Duane, your 100% right. I love the sprint cars and the stock and mod racing was absolutely awesome last night. Tons of passing.

jtslingin-been going there for over 3 years, and had to watch thousands of the stock and mod races, some have been good ones, but mostly it's spinouts and then delays getting the boys back in the right spots.

Duane-great PR keep those free passes coming, curious, do you ever write about those awesome support classes in your columns?

To their credit, they support classes put on a good show, heats and bmains, I enjoyed the racing. However, my young guests were not impressed, they enjoyed the sprints and telling two 11 year olds and two 14 year olds hang in there, it will be worth the wait, to their credit they did, but they were NOT impressed with the "junk cars" as they called some of them. Aren't we trying to bring new fans into racing, judging by the grandstands they could use some new fans.

Run the headline show a little sooner and let the sprint fans go if they want to go, and they will stay if they want to stay. They have done this in the past, maybe it was just WoO but it's nice when they do. I told both these kids parents I'd have them home around 11:30, figuring good weather, a 7:30 start time and also figuring fewer than 30 sprints. We made it with 5 minutes to spare, not that it would have been a problem, but getting out of there at almost 11:00 was a little rediculous. Almost 4 hours to see 3 sprint heats, a meaningless dash and an amain, granted a very good amain, but it would have been a very good amain run an hour earlier too. By the way, I bought 5 tickets and concessions for 4 hungry kids, 5 lemon chills, 4 cheeseburgers, 2 hotdogs, 1 hamburger, 1 pizzasteak, 4 orders of cheesesticks, popcorn and about 8 cokes. A couple of those things were for me. But what I'm trying to say is, is this a type of family you want at the track or not? I'm sure these kids will want to go back, but will they tolerate something they have no interest in to see what they want to see?

Hey, I call it the way I see it. I have been to over 80 tracks in my life and Eldora has the best group of mods and stocks around, period! I am glad you brought new fans and kids, thats the future of this sport. The kids must be true sprint car fans because most of my daughters friends that i bring, same age group as yours, and my cousins kids and friends kids and such, like the stocks and mods better than the sprints. Less noise, less dirt, you now the routine. Maybe i am around all rebel kids or something but most 11 to 14 year old kids i know, love to stay up late on weekends, i know i always wanted to. By they way, those junk cars as you call them, have some big $$$ in them and is where some of the sprint car drivers have cut their teeth and learn to race. Plus, for some its the only form of racing they car afford.

No I dont write about them because the columns i write for are about sprint car racing, not stock car racing, and they are published on a sprint car website, not a stock car website. I do mention things about them off and on though but not much. Just so you know, the Eldora staff wanted all the races over by 10:30, that is their goal each week, in a perfect world it works, it the real world sometimes it does, sometimes it doesnt. I am not sure, maybe i am still in the PR mode, but I had guys there last night that havent been there in 10 years or more and they was impressed how quick the stocks and mods ran off the heats and how quick they were on the track. Thats for real, no BS, they couldnt believe how good of racing it was, their actual words were "exceeded our expections". So i guess it boils down to what you are use to. I will agree the 2nd stock B was a mess but did they drag in out more and more, NO, they checkered flagged it before it was over since the guys couldnt get there stuff together. Most tracks dont do that. Hey thanks for the comment and thanks for reading my stuff. Dont be affraid to stop me and say hi.

jtslingin: I meant to say 35 years, oops

Duane, Thanks for the reply. The kids called them junk, not me, I respect the efforts of those racing them, and realize they are doing the best they can, and making sacrifices to field a car, so I wouldn't call their stuff junk out of respect. I do think the racing was good, I enjoyed Barney Craig's stock car race, really put it on the cushion and made it a show, and Chad Barr, a friend by the way, his run from 10th to 3rd in the bmain was a thrill to see, I know he and his family had to be thrilled.

My kids have been enough that they appreciate the sprints and tolerate the stocks and mods, their friends caught on pretty quick. Me, I was a member of the media, both photo and writer, and for a few years had to stay until the last race was run, so my tolerance for the support divisions can run very low at times. All I'm saying is it wouldn't have killed anyone to run the sprint amain between the support division bmains. They've done it in the past and hopefully they will read this and take the suggestion of a paying customer. I want my kids to say, let's go to the races, instead of saying let's go to the Reds game, or Dragons game, or Columbus Crew game, but it's a hard sell once they have had to sit through 2 hours of what they call boring stuff to get to what they came to see in the first place. I know those who race in the support divisions would be offended and that is not my intent, simply telling the truth here. Keep the main attraction up front more frequently, and chances are we'll stay to watch the other stuff because they won't be bored, grouchy, or too tired, and maybe, just maybe, they will want to come back because they had fun and weren't frustrated.

OK - now all take a step back and think about it. The kids are going to directly react to how YOU react. We have support divisions too - Outlaw Hornets. Now, I could rant and rave like all the other sprint fans (and believe you me, I grew up on sprints), but instead I choose to watch and enjoy ALL racing. To that end, my 6-y/o daughter also enjoys watching ALL of the racing. If you don't like the support classes, that's fine - but think about what your teaching that new group of race fan. Are you teaching them the value of a racer, no matter what class they race in and to respect others, or are you? Give it some thought. Funny, I never remember this type of crud back in the day when they ran jalopies..... David

dnsprint, I agree with you.I've been going to Eldora since the 60's and have always enjoyed all classes of cars that run there. Of coarse I like the winged sprints best, but I love all kinds of racing, and as Duane said, the mods and stocks put on a good show on a tough track. These guys could take the easy way out and run Shady Bowl or Columbus, but they've got the dirt in their veins just like the rest of US!

Finally a great post with respectful dialogue. Personally I haven't been to Eldora in this my third year after 20 years in a row. I travel to Florida and Knoxville with Tommy Bahama every year, he lives closer to Eldora than me. I live near Toledo so I have a two and a half hour drive home from the Big E.

I go to the races for the Sprint cars only. My days of watching bombers are over. In Florida they run th modified feature before the Sprint feature and me and Tommy Bahama have to drive like hell to get the Friendly store for a milk shake before they close (the things we tolerate for racing).

As I get older (42) my tolerance for long shows followed by a long drive home is short, and that's my problem. All I would like to see is the show run on a timely basis and over by 10:30. If they begin to get that done I will return. Granted I am a morning person not a late nighter (too many drinks on the road).

Let's keep sanctioned shows limited to two divisions please....and if they run three, run the sprint feature at 10:00 and let everyone who has wants to stay at the track until the cows come enjoy the bombers and mortifieds and late models...

Again this is a good post...
