Feb. 25, 2011 – Press Release Steel Block Bandits 2011 Season... Does the mention of 200,000 dollars have a good sound to it? Yes, that is right, the D&D Auto Recycling Steel Block Bandits Late Model Series is nearing its first race of the 16-race, 200,000 dollar season. In all, a little more than 200 grand will be up for grabs in cash winnings this year. “This series is making so much noise throughout the Mid-Atlantic. We have established a series that now rivals a lot of super late shows and series throughout the country,” said Bandits series promoter, Danny Wilson. “The track promoters, fans, sponsors and drivers are really taking hold to this series. I think this will be our best year, yet,” Wilson added. The 2011 season is set to kick off on March 26, at County Line Raceway in North Carolina. County Line promoter, James Upchurch, recently increased the purse to make it a $3000-to win, $200-to start event. “I just recently talked to James, and he informed me that the racing community down there is very excited to have the Bandits race there again this year,’’ Wilson said. This race is one of two Bandit events this year at County Line. The second race is a $3,500-to win event on Labor Day weekend on Saturday, Sept. 3. Both are time-trial events. The Bandits will make their first venture to the Hagerstown Speedway in Maryland on April 30, for the Greg Kerr Memorial. This time-trial event will award $4,100-to win, which is synonymous to car number 41 driver by Kerr’s son, Tanner, who enters his first year as a full-time Bandit driver. “I can’t thank the Plessinger family enough for signing our series and allowing Tanner to honor his father,” Wilson said. “This is truly going to be one of the biggest steel block late model events this season.” Two Pennsylvania tracks have signed on with the series for a Memorial Day weekend double-header. This will be the first Bandits race at each venue. Thunder Valley Speedway will host the Bandits on May 28, for a $2,000-to win race, while Central Pennsylvania Speedway will host a time-trial event paying $4,011 to win and $400 to start. Wilson said that Central PA added the 11 dollars to the winner’s share, because this is the 2011 edition of the ‘North versus the South’ at this track. “The winner’s share is awesome, but I have to look at the other end of the spectrum here. Where else can a steel block or limited late model driver go and bank 400 bucks just to start a race,’’ said Bandits series announcer, Mike Donald. Race fans will be happy to know that the Bandits will return to Bill Sawyer’s pristine Virginia Motor Speedway on July 9, for the Firecracker 30. This $3,000-to win, $200-to start race will be a time-trial event, as well. In total, the Bandits will compete in ten time-trial events throughout the season. Natural Bridge Speedway owners and promoters, Larry and Karey Ramsey, along with Eastside Speedway promoters, G.W. Fitzgerald and Tim Southern, have worked together to bring the Bandits to their Virginia tracks for three double-headers this season. All races there will be $2,000 to win, and each race at Eastside will be a time-trial event. The first double-header at these historical Virginia tracks is set for June 3 and 4, with Eastside hosting the Friday event. The Saturday event at Natural Bridge will be the second-annual Dana Dove Memorial. Dana Dove was the mother of Cliff Dove, who is the photographer for the Bandits series. The Bandits return to these tracks on July 15 and 16, with Natural Bridge hosting the Friday race. The July 16 event at Eastside will be the third-annual Chris Loan Memorial race. Loan was a pit-crew member for Petie Coffey, the late Wilson Shanks, and most recently, for 2009 Bandit series champion, Kris Looney. The tracks will host its final double-header of the season on Sept. 9 and 10, with Eastside hosting the Friday race. Eastside Speedway will also host the Bandits for a stand-alone event on April 16. The 2010 Steel Block Bandits track promoter of the year, Rick Jones, has signed the Bandits to three races at his two tracks. The Bandits will trek to Allegany County Speedway in Maryland on May 7, to compete in a $2,000-to win event. On Aug. 13, the series will travel northward to the Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex in Pennsylvania for a $2,000-to win event. The season will culminate at Allegany County Speedway for a two-day show on Oct. 14 and 15, as the Bandits sanction the $5,000-to win Western Maryland Nationals for the second year in a row. Many race teams should be on hand, because this race pays $300 to start. The series finale at Allegany County Speedway will also crown the Steel Block Bandits series champion for 2011. Thirty registered Steel Block Bandits teams will be competing for an estimated point fund of $12,000. The series champion will collect a $5,000 paycheck at the 2011 awards banquet following the last race of the season. Series promoter, Danny Wilson, said that he is still receiving phone calls and emails from other racetracks that are expressing interest in the Steel Block Bandits. “There is a possibility we could add another race or two, but April 30 is the deadline to do so,” he stated. Steel Block Bandit race teams and race fans can get an early start to the 2011 racing season of sorts, as the Bandits will hosts its second-annual car show and season-opener part at Glory Days Grill in Winchester, VA, on March 20, from noon until 4 p.m. The series has teamed up with Augusta Motor Speedway in West Virginia for the show, and this event is open to all types of racecars. Then on Friday, March 25, County Line Raceway will host an open practice for the Steel Block Bandits the night before the series first race at that track on March 26.
