Brown impressive in Knoxville opener

By Gary Thomas

April 24, 2007... Grain Valley, Missouri driver Brian Brown’s number one goal coming into this season was to win the Knoxville Raceway 410 track championship. That goal looks like it very well could be accomplished as he and the Doogs Motorsports team are off to a great start after picking up an impressive victory this past Saturday during the Knoxville Raceway season opener.

Last year Brian came up five points shy of the 410 track championship at the historic ½ mile speedway and this year he’s determined to not let it slip out of his grasp. He came into the Knoxville Raceway season opener on the heels of a very strong weekend of action at the I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Nebraska that saw him pick up his first win of the season on opening night. The only thing that kept him from completing the two night sweep was mechanical gremlins that took him out of contention while leading during the final night.

Thirty 410 sprint cars signed into the pits at the Knoxville Raceway season opener and Brian began the evening by qualifying 21st quick with a lap of 15.878 aboard the Ditzfield Transfer, Housby Trucks, American Compressed Steel, Michael Ross Memorial Foundation No. 21 Maxim.

Brian lined up seventh in the night’s second heat race and charged up to a fourth place finish to transfer the K & N Filters, Yeager’s Harley Davidson, Hostiowa.net, Champion Brands No. 21 into the main event.

With the sub-par qualifying time it put Brian way back in the 17th starting spot for the evenings 20 lap feature event. "Blackjack" was up to the challenge and had carved his way through the field and sat in fourth by the time a caution came out on lap seven.

The restart saw Brian make the move under Randy Anderson to move the Wolfe Eye Clinic, Butler Built Performance, Shock Doctor, Weld Racing Maxim into the third position. The 27 year-old then chased down second running Ricky Logan and on lap 10 he made the move around Logan for second. Brian and Logan battled it out for second as they both closed in on leader Skip Jackson. The racing was fast and furious as the three front runners had a great three car battle for the lead and on lap 14 Brian moved the Bell Helmets, Rod End Supply, VK Graphics, Hoosier Tires No. 21 into the lead.

"Blackjack" began to pull away slightly and looked to be on his way to victory as the white flag was set to come out, but Jackson spun to bring out a caution. It set up a green-white-checkered restart but as soon as the green light’s came back on, a five car pileup forced a red flag to be thrown and prolonged the race even further. The race went green for the final time on the ensuing restart and Brian pulled away to pick up the $3,000 victory and take the first step towards the Knoxville Raceway track championship.
