That's why I miss open trailers. Just getting to see a racecar going down the road was awesome.

Those were the days.

Today you must have a "big hauler" in order to run up front! Wink

I remember when Lil Dave and I first saw this rig we called it the Circus Wagon.

I think a company maybe Graham trailers had started building this type of trailer. This was the first gooseneck I remember most were pull type and this one had the double enclosed boxes. The dually

van was a first too and in the Speedway Motors colors. I agree driving to races and coming up on a sprinter on a open trailer was always a Rush!!

Don't you know... back in the day... people were flipping out about this fancy high dollar rig!

"How can people spend so much on a trailer? On that trick high dollar customized van/dually hauler?"

"How could trailers ever be any bigger?"

LOL

Awesome pic!

you guys may like the open trailers of yesterday, but, the wings take a beating wisteling down the highway, count the rims and tires , today, thats proubly 7k worth of rubber and wheels laying there , and to wake up and find your new injection,/magneto/,gear,ect ect gone! in the hotel parking lot !would completly floor me ! ya, thier pretty cool, but, thats what started the ginormous rigs of today. its just evolution , bigger bigger bigger ! although , that rig is pretty unique, proubly laying behind a barn somewhere in Iowa ?

Ok I found a pic of Van Mays Rig in 1971 Ted Van-Pelt Photo. Look a Corvette !!!!! Beside him is Bobby Allen using what looks to be a Chevy Nova.

Sorry, but I've seen pics of Indy cars being towed on open trailers behind station wagons in the '50's...and I think that the '40's midgets were all towed on open trailers, too....

Seems to me that open trailers were being used for a long time before enclosed haulers hit....but Bobby Allen hardly started the practice.......

Just saying...

Thanks for sharing the picture. I have forwarded it to Bill and it is making the rounds here at Speedway. Bill had a lot of confidence in Wolfgang all those tires (he says they could carry 40 tires mounted up before the days of beadlock wheels) and no spare wing.

I'd like to see a pic of Tim Kuhn, towing with a station wagon that had a spare frame chained down on top!

I logged alot of miles in that "Circus Wagon" in '79. Actually, that was a good name for it. It drew alot of attention where ever we went.

We got the rig about mid-way through the '79 season. The trailer was from Reznor in Ottumwa, Ia. Wolfie picked it up and ran a wheel off of it before he got back. Bearing wasn't tightened or something.

Reznor built nice open trailers. The one we had before this was low to the ground, double tire rack, and towed like a dream. This one we had to add legs on the ramps and build extensions so we could load the car. We always had to round-up some fans in the pits to help push.

Truth is, it wasn't near enough truck for that trailer, at times we spent more time working on it than we did the race car.

Erie, Co., Kinser, Sammy, Ferkle, everyone was working on their cars at the motel, we were laying under the truck.

Wolfie won the race anyway.

I remember pullinig into a station for gas and the attendant asked if we raced, or just sold tires?

The front compartment on the trailer held 3 engines. IF you needed the one in the middle, you had a chore ahead.

Spare car and wing? They were in Tipton, Mo.

Got cought in a storm at Knoxville, everyone ran for cover, after it passed, we couldn't find Singer at all, he was nowhere. Pretty soon the one compartment door opened and he came crawling out. Guess it was good for something!

It was mainly the tranny, kept overheating and slipping. I remember coming across western Kansas on I-70, 100*, 60 mph winds, and there we sat.

YES, it was heavy. ALOT of tounge weight. Looking back, we should've moved the motors to the rear, but we didn't want to have to run any farther for our stuff at the track, and after all we went through to mount them, we just left'em there. The front tire rack had mounted tires on each end to hold the bars, and we'd stuff un-mounteds in between to try to help.

We tried to keep the tires we intended to run on the back 2 racks for easy access at the track.

It had capt. chairs in front, and a couch across the back that folded out.

I'm curious what year this was as well. Cheaters day was always in the fall, and I don't recall running it in '79. This may have been in '80 after Singer and I left the team. I know they used the rig for about another season.

Does anyone know where the trailer is today?
