...I heard through the grapevine that officials from I-55 Raceway are in talks with World of Outlaw officials about maybe postponing Saturdays race due to extremely cold temperatures. Temperatures are only supposed to be around 40 degrees during the day saturday with lows dipping down in the low to mid 20's, making racing conditions very difficult for both drivers and fans alike. So, please....take this for what its worth....like I said, this is just a rumor but I did hear it from a very reliable source!

The plate and screws in my neck don't much care for ice bowl conditions. All openers up here in Minnesota and western Wisconsin have been canceled due to cold windy conditions so I won't be tempted to put my hardware to the test. They weren't Sprint races anyways, we won't see our first Sprint weekend until the end of April. I decided to concentrate almost exclusively on Sprints this season so I wasn't planning to go kick off my season until then anyways. The forecast and difficulty working the track could postpone the openers until then. We had 81 degrees one day last week, now it's not even up to 32 out there. Up in our area the first couple of weeks are sometimes hard on equipment due to frost coming out in the turns.

By my way of thinking (at 55 years young with a bad neck) racing is a summertime sport. What's the point if you can't enjoy cold beer, camping and taking in some eye candy? I'm a Minnesotan, I own a snowmobile suit and Sorels, but they were retired from ice fishing a decade ago. I prefer to wear that gear only when blowing snow out of the driveway, not standing in an infield with a camera.

If they race let me know how it went. I'll join you folks when it warms up ;)

Seriously, this time of year can be hit and miss on account of the weather. In addition to the cold we lose shows to rain during this early part of the season.

I'm not suggesting that they run the show in mid 20's conditions, however they did just that at Tulsa Speedway about 15-20 years ago in March. The wind chill factor was in the teens and the track surface actually was frozen over in places. I remember Steve Kinser changing engines after his heat race. BRRRRRRRR!!! This was done outside the trailor with no heat. And as I recall, his and Karl's efforts paid off with the feature win.

From St. Louis Racing

Racing is a go for Saturday. Phone calls have been coming in from drivers of another Sprint Car Association. Some of them are also coming.

Advance ticket sales would make this one different than a regular opener or Saturday night show.

When faced with the decision to attend a nearby Sprint Car race in cold weather or stay home I have always toughed it out and gone to the race. My neck and shoulders hurt like h*ll the next day but it was worth it :)

I'll never understand why promoters in states like Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and surrounding states up there try to race this time of year.  Yes they'll occasionally get a good day here or there and sneak a race in but for the most part they end up cancelling the majority of the races during February, March, and most of April.

I used to enjoy going to races that early in the year and freezing my sack off, but not much anymore.................lol!

Hell we had 80 degree temps early this week in Southeast Mo. then this cold front came along. Felt like the middle of May or June for a few days.

Heck, we had golf courses open and being used up here in Canada in January of this year, HUH? I sure hope it's nice at Eldora next weekend, but I remember getting snowed out there on this same weekend about a decade ago, arghhhh. Take It Easy....

cheroger,

I remember that race very well. I think it was the coldest I have ever been at the track. If my memory is correct, it was a taped race for TNN and I still have the tape. One of the best things about that race was the 360 wheel stand the Hewitt did. It was a classic.

Wesmar,

It's called old age!

LOL, then you haven't been to a Minnesota or Wisconsin dirt track opener. Some of our openers are like a December Packers Vikings game. Anyone who isn't wearing a snowmobile suit and winter boots don't make it to the B Main.
