Funk scores top-five finish in BCRA midget debut

Andrew Kunas

ANDERSON, Calif. – NSCS racer Evan Funk's debut in a midget was a rather successful one on Saturday.

The La Conner, Washington driver drove the Lindsey Motorsports #23 Beast to a third place finish in the Bay Cities Racing Association midget main event at Shasta Raceway Park in Anderson, California. Funk came from the 12th starting position in a caution-plauged race called with only 22 laps completed due to curfew. Finishing in front of Funk was winner Dallas Melby and second place finisher Justin Grant.

Not bad at all for the first time out.

"Our first goal was to stay out of trouble, make the main, and keep our nose clean," Funk about his eventful midget debut in his first visit to Shasta Raceway Park. "It was way more than we expected."

Washington was well represented in the BCRA event. Three of the top five finishers, including Funk, were from the Evergreen State. Melby and Brea Lopez were the other two.

"It was really nice to have the Washington drivers do so well down there," Funk commented. "The California guys have been known to be really fast, on dirt and pavement."

The 17-year-old qualified 12th quickest out of the 21 cars that were entered, coming in with a time of 15.570 seconds around the 3/8-mile, semi-banked, asphalt oval. He then proceeded to take the victory in the second heat race.

"We qualified OK. Then we won the heat race, which was big," Funk said about his first competitive heat in a midget.

The next race on the schedule for Evan Funk is the April 14 USAC Western Sprint Car season opener at Madera Speedway in California, where he will pilot the family's #8 non-wing pavement sprint car. He will also climb back into Lindsey's midget in the USAC Western Midget event. According to USAC's website, the sprint car main event is scheduled for 50 laps and the midget main event is 100 laps.

Funk will then bring out the family's Speedmart Inc. and Frontier Chevrolet sponsored winged dirt 360 sprint car for the two-day Northwest Sprint Challenge Series opener at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash. on April 27 and 28. He gets back into Lindsey's midget for the WMRA midget race at Stateline Speedway in Post Falls, Idaho on May 5. Funk's visit to Stateline will be his first.
