28 CARS ENTERED FOR SATURDAY’S “ALLSTATE LIGHTNING 100” MIDGET RACE IN TEXAS

A tremendous field of 28 cars is pre-entered already for Saturday’s “Allstate Lightning 100” presented by Toyota USAC National Midget race at Thunder Hill Raceway in Kyle, Texas. It’s the second appearance for the series at the track which hosted last October’s USAC 40-lap debut, won by Dave Steele.

Steele, of Tampa, Fla., is among the strong field which will attack the 3/8-mile paved oval located between Austin and San Antonio. He’ll challenge Josh Wise’s 1-lap track qualifying record of 13.981 seconds.

Steele and his teammate, two-time series champion Dave Darland, will pilot Toyota-powered cars entered by Nine Racing of Laguna Beach, Calif. That team has won 10 of the last 14 USAC National Midget Car Owner Championships.

NASCAR vets Bobby East, the 2004 USAC National Midget Car Series titlist, and former USAC Silver Crown and National Sprint Car Series champion Tracy Hines, who won USAC’s Silver Crown race March 23 at Homestead, Fla., are also entered. Hines and Levi Jones will team in Chevrolet-powered cars entered by Tony Stewart.

Defending series champion Jerry Coons, Jr., point leader Darren Hagen and two-time National Midget Driver of the Year Brad Kuhn are also entered, along with a bevy of talented drivers. They include the winningest female driver in USAC history – Stephanie Mockler, plus 2006 USAC Kenyon Midget Champ Chris Windom, 2006 National Midget Most Improved Driver Brad Loyet, Kasey Kahne teammates Brady Bacon and Kevin Swindell, Keith Kunz teammates Donnie Ray Crawford and National Rookie of the Year Bryan Clauson, reigning Western Midget and Sprint Rookies of the Year Chase Barber and Bradley Galedrige, Regional Midget Rookie of the Year Brian Olson and Chuck Gurney, Jr.

Swindell’s father is World of Outlaws veteran Sammy Swindell and Gurney’s father is Chuck Gurney, the 1989 USAC Silver Crown champion.
