Do you remember a year ago when Joey was strugglin' a bit? He said they were gonna suffer for a while but eventually this group was gonna give him the best motor out there, he wasn't lyin'! Patience, one of the great virtues and the one I lack the most of, arghhh. Take It Easy....

March 13th AutoSport Radio Show Saldana Interview:

"Last year when Kasey did this deal he wanted to have a program that was totally different from anyone else, which kind of scared me, but now I think it is starting to pay off. We have our own shocks, we have our own engines, we have our own cars. We do a lot of stuff in house and I think in a couple of years when we do figure all this out no one else is going to be able to get it... So hopefully we get to the point that we’re good enough that people want what we have and they can’t have it. Right now I definitely feel we have the best engine in the pits. I know no one else can have a Rick Long Speedway Engine, and definitely a Mopar... Mopar has pretty much cut out all the support except for Kasey Kahne Racing, and I think that’s why you are seeing a lot more success with our engines too, because we have a lot more support financially to get it done."

How does an 11.6 lap on the Gap's 4/10th track relate to Eldora's 12.7 on just under a 1/2?

I give credit to the engine builder. Donny did everything to pass Joey except run into him. Those Shavers are running pretty good too.

It relates very well !!!!!

Heck of a night there last night.

The banking looks steeper when you walk the track after the races.

Now if we could just get Johnny Gibson to remind the NASCAR oriented fans to sit back down after they stand for the 4 abreast parade lap............

Quinn - I didn't see you there? And I even walked the track after the race. That was one wicked joint...

The "in-house" program is nothing new.  When my dad was at Blue Max he and his team did Sammy's engines only from 1983-1987.  Raymond Beadle (owner)  had several other WoO teams wanting them to build their engines but Beadle refused to do so.

Same with Steve, Karl, and Mark Kinser later on down the road as they did their own thing as well.

I have wondered for a few years now especially in today's enviroment when the sprint car world would follow Nascar's steps in the way that everything they build or fabricate is done "in-house" with it being only available to themselves.  I could be off base though..............lol

I was there, Spridge. Sitting in the first turn amongst all the NASCAR fans. I thought you was going there, from another recent post elsewhere. Guess I should have called you. Eckert sat beside me for time trials and the A-main. We had room for one more as well.

It was a wicked track. Hope they have em back next yr,I'll go again.

Wouldn't the start up costs of an in-house engine program be a little overwhelming. Wesmar, I'm curious to here your thoughts regarding the costs of this. I know it was done in the past and is still done by Steve Kinser but how many people are there that have the knowledge and ability and what kind of salary would/could they command?

Good question Bolts. Yeah the start up costs are very expensive, engine builders like us, Kistler, Ott, Shaver, Gaerte, etc......... have a few hundred thousand dollars wrapped up in machinery and parts so we can provide the best product to the car owners.

I don't know how many people actually have the knowledge to do this, but I have recognized over the past 5 years or so through our gear drive company, Shaver-Wesmar Gear Drives that there are a ton of smaller engine companies throughout the country.

As far as salary goes it's like everything else, it depends on experience. I'll never forget when my dad quit Blue Max in 1986 and started Wesmar from the ground up. Without going into details I can remember when I graduated high school in 1988 at 17 years old and working for free for the first year. Granted I had a roof and momma's cooking as I lived at home. The second year was better as my dad paid me $50.00 bucks a week and as we got more business it seems about six months to a year later he bumped my pay up to $100.00 a week. Talk about shittin' in tall cotton!!! As word spread that we were on our own and not doing engines for Sammy only the work started pouring in and each year got better and better. Now here I am 19 years out of high school, married with one kid, and own my own house I'm bringing home a whopping $300.00 a week before taxes!! J/K

The track must have been dry because the late model record is 12 flat, and I think a LM with big sideboards and all turned an 11.75 at a race in the past.

I would've thought the Outlaws would've been deep into the 10 second range for sure. 11.7 is still hauling the mail though.
