Tuesdays with TMAC – March Madness!

(Bill W) March 13, 2007 - March Madness is upon us this week…and we're not talking basketball (this time anyway)! After a week off spent in preparation (and yes, taking in some of the family's basketball games), Terry McCarl and the crew are itching to point their rig to the Deep South to join up with the World of Outlaws. "It's good to be home, but it's time to get back racin'!" says the veteran.

The sport's best will descend on Houston Raceway Park, located in Baytown, Texas for a shootout this Friday, March 16. The traveling WoO band will then travel about 340 miles, via I-10 and I-55 to battle at the Pike County Speedway near Magnolia, Mississippi on Saturday night.

This marks the first visit to both facilities for the World of Outlaws since 2005, when TMAC set quick time at both venues in a March swing by the series. The unknown awaits a bit as a new configuration awaits sprint car's elite drivers. Houston Raceway Park has been reconfigured from a semi-banked 4/10 mile to a 'big ¼ mile'.

No one knows really what to expect on the track, but McCarl thinks highly of Houston Raceway Park. "It's a beautiful facility, we park on concrete, it has a really nice grandstand, the pit area is state of the art, and we can expect a great crowd!"

Despite his quick time at HRP in 2005, TMAC remembers well the rough feature event that saw him finish 19th, with good reason. "The kid helping us forgot to attach the left front lower shock. Needless to say, it was a handful," he jokes.

Pike County Speedway's high-banked 3/8 miler awaits on Saturday. In the WoO's last visit there (2005), Terry set quick time at 13.578, but not much went well after that. He looks forward to better results at a track that he has registered top tens in the past. "We've had some good runs there, especially back when I had a real limited budget. It's a nice track, real racy. It's got a really good banking in the corners."

It's always a treat for McCarl to roll into southern Mississippi. "The fans down there are always really fun, because they don't get to see sprints real often!" he says. If you get out to either race this weekend, be sure to stop by and say hello to the McCarl Motorsports gang!

Confidence is on the side of the Altoona, Iowa, driver, as he is currently riding third in the point standings after seven events. As for the expected warm weather down south, the Iowan says, "As long as I'm not shoveling snow, I'm happy!"

In"Terry"gation

Heather from Kansas City, MO: Terry, What do you think about a Blaze Orange Camouflage paint scheme for the Nationals? Maybe with gold or chrome reflective numbers? It would be a lock for "best appearing car"! Great for merchandising!

TMAC answers: That sounds like a good idea. We are always trying to think of something different to come up with at the Nationals. It is a lot of work especially with how busy our schedule is at that time of year and there are teams who spend a lot of money to try to get best looking car. Our team actually won the best dressed crew a few years ago. I'm excited about our new apparel that will be coming soon. Stay tuned!
