(March 10) Four former Arizona sprint car champions were in the field for the opening race for the American Sprint Car Series Saturday night at Manzanita Speedway and they swept the top four positions in the 25 lap feature leaving it to the rest of the 29 car field to battle for lesser positions. Surprisingly the best of the rest was the 2006 mini sprint car champion Jeremy Reagles who came out of the ninth row to finish fifth in his first sprint car start.

Two time defending state champion Jeremy Sherman beat Josh Pelkey, the 1997 champion into the first turn and never looked back. Charles Davis, Jr., a two time champion, drove by Pelkey and finished second and Pelkey held off the 1998 champion Bob Ream, Jr. for third.

Reagles, whose father Dan finished second in the 1992 final sprint car points, had the fans attention as he drove like a veteran in earning the hard charger award in his sprint car debut. Rounding out the top ten were Ronnie Clark, last year's top rookie Mike Colegrove, Mike Leslie, R.J. Johnson and Shon Deskins.

Reagles established himself as the favorite to win rookie of the year honors and he is off to a faster start than Colegrove who had the best rookie season in recent times last year when he finished third in points. Colegrove did not get his first top ten finish until the third race and did not crack the top five until the Salute to Indy 50 lapper on May 27 when he finished third.

The four ten lap heat races were won by Sherman, Davis, Leslie and Jeff Henry. Reagles came out of the fourth row to win the 12 lap semi main and Pelkey won the eight lap trophy dash.

Three of the seven rookies in the field made the feature. Nick Aiuto, driving for Bill Sweeney failed to as did Daniel Williams.

The first race for the American Sprint Car Series lived up to the pre race hype. Ronnie Shuman, the ASCS Canyon State comptition director, encouraged the field to make the fans the number one concern. Both the sprints and the dirt modifieds kept the show moving at a fast pace and the final checkered flag fell at 10:20.

Tucson's R.C. Whitwell took the lead on the third lap of the 20 lap BTS dirt modified feature which was contested on the half mile track and was never seriously challenged in the season opener for the modifieds. Several yellow flags kept the field close but Whitwell never faltered and beat Robert King, Jr. by 2.68 seconds. Former champion Tom Lucas finished third ahead of another former champion, Mark Harrison. Nick Griego was fifth. The rest of the top ten were Ricky Thornton, Jr., Ricky Bogard, Clint Fouts, Chuck Kuehl and Greg Bedia.

The three heat races were won by John Cox, King and Lucas.
