Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl

took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my

pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3

pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her

discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she

hailed the manager for help . While he tried to explain the transaction to

her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this?

Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

1. Teaching Math In 1950

A logger

sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of

the price. What is his profit?

2. Teaching Math In 1960

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is

4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

3. Teaching Math In 1970

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is

$80. Did he make a profit?

4. Teaching Math In 1980

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is

$80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number

20.

5. Teaching Math In 1990

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and

inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the

preservation of our

woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think

of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after

answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the

logger cut down their homes?

(There are no wrong answers. )

6. Teaching Math In 2007

Un hachero vende una carretada de maderapara $100. El costo de la

producciones es $80. Cuanto dinero ha hecho?

How about a little help with translating #6? I just a member of the white minority and can only deal with English.

The art of counting back change is lost. I had a guy working here that couldn't do it so we didn't let him work the counter anymore. pitiful for a grown man.

some folks actually do not know how many quarters in a dollar.

My son carries NO money with him ever, everything is debit card, as smart as he is as a network design engineer at UPS, I would not be suprised that he not know how to make change, hell a cursive signature is darn near impossible for him, and he at a six figure income level at 24 yrs old.

Let's just say I find the subject of the post ironic, given the spelling error that starts it off.

I had a similar situation at a major dept. store. The computer system managing the registers developed a glitch and would not show the amount of change to return, just zeros. The cashier had no clue how much change I had coming! I finally told her the amount and had her lay out the cash I had given her, the amount of the purchase and the correct change. She didn't believe me and summoned the lead cashier to finish the transaction. They shut down the registers and would not check out any more customers until the system was fixed. Most checkout lines are really humorous and don't even think about offering petty change to get even coins or dollars in return! It seems cashiers are trained to offer blank stares of wonderment.

Clearly, some of us don't know the difference between 'Grammar' and 'Spelling.

Clearly, some of us take themselves entirely too serious. Have you had the opprotunity to meet with cubic dollars, big right rear or mspn? You would fit in with them quite well.
