I'm Curious as to the Relationship to Which USAC has with NASCAR? Reason I asked is I was under the Impression that when the 2 entities joined it would be for the benefit of both Organizations? Although I see a lot of NASCAR at the Dirt Tracks, I don't see any USAC at the Cup races? What I mean is I never hear ANY of the Announcers mention ANY of the USAC divisions as "Open Wheel" racing? Its almost like IRL, CART, and F1 is the only form of "Open Wheel" racing? Not to Mention that Some "Road Racers" run with Fenders! We all Know which Organization has Produced More NASCAR Stars and yet there is never a Mention of USAC? Having been around Longer and at one time Being the Sanctioning Body of Todays NASCAR, Why is there never any mention of USAC? If Anybody NEEDS Support its USAC's Local Tracks! Toyota Had an Ad Campaign which Actually showed USAC Midgets at Bellville. Why can't USAC put together an Ad Campiagn that Could incorporate the Local Tracks on the weekends leading up to a NASCAR weekend. Perhaps a "Where the Next Drivers Coming From" before the Race. Followed by a "There is Still Racing to Watch" after the Event? I'd like to see more weekends like This Weekend in Vegas. I think its Great USAC/ CRA are running with the Cup Guys in Town. They can actually come out and be Team Owners, (Tony, Casey), and see their Teams in Action. And/ Or Drive, (J.J.Yeley). I think it would be Great to Showcase the Drivers That are Supporting There Roots. I think More of them should be given Credit for Supporting the Racing that Got Them to Cup Cars. I also Think NASCAR should Show some Love and Mention USAC as Open Wheelers, And Get Their Fans to Support Locals Tracks around the Country.

This is a bucket of worm stew that has been discussed many times on this board.

Let me warm up the stew a little.

Perhaps this is because USAC is primarely in the business of sanctioning races, not promoting them. They generally leve the promoting to the track operators. NASCAR does both. WoO did both. SCRA was trying to do both.

Track operators promote in different ways. Some try to get the fans through the gate, others primarily seem to try and build car counts. The really succesful track operators do both.

NASCAR even has the teams themselves helping with the promotion.

Let the discussions begin.

It is an interesting discussion and I think harryfan summed up the differences quite well.  My take? In reading on other Indiana based boards and in discussion with people in Indiana it appears to be a very popular opinion that Tony George owns USAC outright although no one seems to want to confirm it.  Mr George also happens to own a little racetrack in Indianapolis that hosts NASCAR once a year so he probably converses with the France family who controls NASCAR itself (and also owns a couple of little racetracks themselves, including on in Daytona).  I suppose Mr France noticed that a couple of boys who raced in Indiana ended up racing with Mr France and rang up Mr George.  I suppose the conversation went something like "Tony?, Bill here.  I've noticed that a couple of your USAC boys have ended up down here racin.  That blankety-blank Bruton Smith (owns a little racetrack in Charlotte and a couple other places)  went and started a bunch of racing series of his own and runs them only on the race tracks he owns. What can you throw together to run on some of my racetracks?"  <Tony> "Well Bill, you've got some awful big racetracks and we had a problem at Nashville with the Silver Crown cars' rear wheels coming off the ground at the end of the straights.  I don't know if we've got anything to run for you.  How about we spec up some really ugly cars that require our car owners to pitch all their existing equipment and buy all new stuff?  They'll be happy to do it for you."  <Bill> "That sounds great Tony, we'll see you at Darlington in a couple years"  So all in one swoop you've got an apparent marketing agreement between USAC & NASCAR, new Silver Crown cars and a somewhat popular PRA series running the old Silver Crown cars on pavement.  And everyone lives happily every after.

Are there unique benefits USAC sanctioning offers to the people doing the racing here, in California? We had a strong dirt sprint car program for years without USAC. Anyone who wanted to haul back East and race USAC sanctioned races was free to do so. VRA gets along fine without them. Do some believe if USAC wasn't sanctioning races here any longer sprint car racing at Perris and elsewhere in California would just cease to exist?

Everything you know is wrong.
