Spencer first place, Williams, Wise, Gaunt and Jones

Damian finished 6th after being put to the back for coming out late...he started 20th.  He was second quick in time trials.

Spencer Scores CRA Victory at Perris

PERRIS, Calif. – Mike Spencer found the high groove Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway late in the 30-lap race, allowing him momentum enough to take the lead and win his first USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series feature of 2007.

Spencer, driving for Ron Chaffin, was the first and last of three leaders on the night, taking the lead for the final time on Lap 20 from Rickie Gaunt and pulling away from the remainder of the field before the checkered flag fell.

The victory solidified Spencer's first win for Chaffin's squad. It also marked his fourth career USAC/CRA feature triumph.

Spencer, of Temecula, Calif., led the first lap before perennial powerhouse Tony Jones, set to record his first feature victory of the season, took over for the next six laps. Gaunt grabbed the lead on Lap 8 and held the point until Lap 20, when Spencer swept past.

Rip Williams also passed Gaunt late in the race and established a strong second-place finish ahead of Gaunt, Jones and last year's National Sprint champ Josh Wise – who started 11th – and CRA titlist Damion Gardner, who all staged a serious battle on the bottom side of the track near the end of the race. Wise finally ended third, trailed by Gaunt and Jones. Gardner finished the night sixth.

Scotty Weir earned his second straight Hard Charger Award after coming from 19th to seventh.

Jimmy Crawford kicked off the evening in qualifying by posting a fast time of 17.030 seconds.

The series returns to action Wednesday and Thursday at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Wise and J.J. Yeley return to their roots after moving to Stock cars over the last three years.

Track conditions: very dry owing to a cold, hard, and pretty steady wind from across the reservoir pretty much all night.

Did young Mike prove he could beat the "old masters" under -extremely- adverse conditions? Did Damion finally get a grip on the 71 car (after a lot of disagreement about his starting position; penalized to the back of the field for coming out late) and move it from about 18th to 6th? Did Josh Wise show he could -go- in a suspect car (-not- one of those million-dollar beasts he drives in the midwest) that was smoking noticeably during the B feature? Did Garrett Hansen show us he was "for real" (as long as he lasted) against the likes of Kruser, Cowboy, Darrin, Josh W. and Rickie?

Too bad the weather kept so many away. It was a Really Fine Show.

I believe the hard charger is awarded from the origanal starting position, which was 8th for Gardner.he was sent to the rear for being late for the line-up.

That could be but no matter how you cut it, Gardner put on the best show, passing 13 cars that was more than any one and at one time he was up to 4th.Thanks for your input.

Turn4 is correct, the Hard Charger is based on your scheduled starting spot.  Theoretically you could be on the pole and spin out in the first corner.  Restart at the back and get the lead, spin again and come back to win the race.  Meanwhile, everyone else finishes exactly where they started except 20th & 21st starting spots swap finishing places.  You would have been real fun watch but you wouldn't get the Hard Charger award because the guy who finished 20th would be the "Hard Charger".  I believe they made the Hard Charger rules clear cut so the award would be objective instead of a subjective popularity contest.  There's been a lot of guys who got sent to the back and clearly been the "Hard Charger" but didn't win the award.  You have a memory of who put on the best show and I guess that's all that matters.
