NSCS adds August race at Grays Harbor
Andrew Kunas, NSCS Publicist

ELMA, Wash. – An addition and a minor change has been made to the inaugural schedule for the Northwest Sprint Challenge Series.

Grays Harbor Raceway announced on Tuesday the turnover of control of the Elma, Washington track from Debbie Brownfield and Brownfield Promotions to George Wade of Great Northwest Promotions. Grays Harbor Raceway also announced the return of the World of Outlaws Sprint Series on Monday, August 27. In addition to that event, the Northwest Sprint Challenge Series has another race scheduled at Grays Harbor on Sunday, August 26.

With its sixth race at Elma's 3/8-mile, high-banked clay oval, the NSCS schedule is now 21 races strong. In years past, the NSCS's predecessor series, the Northern Sprint Tour, held an event the night before the World of Outlaws at Grays Harbor Raceway and it was common to see at least a couple of drivers from the top 410 sprint car series in the country hop into 360 sprint cars to get an early look at the track. The tradition of the preceding 360 sprint car event will continue with the August 26 NSCS event.

"We are very excited to be scheduled for a night before the World of Outlaws at Grays Harbor Raceway," NSCS co-founder Shawna Wilskey said. "We anticipate some drivers from the World of Outlaws will be finding rides for the NSCS event. It is a great experience for our drivers to get to test their skills against some of the best sprint car drivers in the country."

In years past, such top drivers such as Tim Shaffer, Shane Stewart, and Terry McCarl have climbed into 360's for the pre-WoO event, and both Shaffer and McCarl found victory lane.

Wade, who has recently promoted Shasta Raceway Park in Anderson, California was also pleased have the NSCS for another show.

"It's going to compliment the Outlaw show," Wade said. "They (Northern Sprint Tour) were there before with Fred Brownfield. This is to help Grays Harbor County. The World of Outlaws was the biggest sporting event in six counties, the "Big E" Weekend, and it's gone. This will be big, though it is on a Monday. The NSCS itself is an integral part of that weekend."

Another minor change made to the schedule also involves Grays Harbor Raceway, though no dates have been moved. After ten years the Evergreen State Sprint Challenge as it was is no more. Grays Harbor Raceway announced the two-day event, scheduled for July 20 and 21 as the start of Northwest Speed Week this year, has been re-named the Fred Brownfield Memorial Sprint Challenge in honor of the track's late promoter.

"Fred's first love was that," Wade said of the former Evergreen State Sprint Challenge. "(Name change) had to be done. It's an honor to him. He built the NST to what it is today, now the NSCS."

The "BiggiE" Weekend in Elma has been an extremely popular event for years, both for the town of Elma and the fans who visit.

"We look forward also to the carnival of events Grays Harbor always puts on before the races for all of our fans," Wilskey also said.

The other NSCS events at Grays Harbor Raceway are the two-day opener on Friday and Saturday, April 27 and 28 and a single-day event on Saturday, June 30.
