I just received a email about 4m.net being hacked last week and it seems like a lot of message boards or web sites get hacked so I thought I would post a little info about out security.

Hoseheadforums.com is scanned by HackerSafe.com. Basically what Hacker Safe does is try to hack us and then they tell us about any vulnerabilities that show up. Hacker Safe also does PCI scanning which is a standard set forth by the Visa and Master Card for online credit card security. They also can test to see if you are acceptable to a Denial of Service attack.

HoseHeadForums.com is a certified Hacker Safe site.

We also build all of our own program code. Usually all the sites that you hear about being hacked are using open source software products. Open Source software is usually a free program. Since it is open source and free all a hacker has to do is go through the program source code and find a security flaw. Once they find a flaw then they go out and find sites that are using that software program and hack them. Since we build all of our own code no one has access to it but us which makes it pretty hard for anyone to find a security flaw.

If anybody has any questions about security please email me.

Thanks for using HoseHeadForums.com

Do you work for microsoft? I think if you research the subject, it is the other way around. Open Source products are amoung the safest out there.

I use Linux Ubuntu on one of my computers and it's more secure than Windows because (a) only about 1% of the OS's are Linux so the hackers don't bother with it and (b) patches are issued on a daily basis. I also use the open source library of software that is in the Linux repository and that too is patched on a regular basis.

I think what Jeff is talking about when he says open source are some of the projects that aren't being updated. We tried a message board script on my site that was the last free version and the next upgrade would have been the paid version. In our case my son-in-law, who is one of the owners and main programmer for grapheety.com tried to do some security enhancements on the free version but they didn't work. As far as a free distro of Linux Ubuntu like I'm using, open office or one of the many open source projects I wouldn't hesitate to use them.

I was referring to open source web site scripts. Like open source forums or message boards. Open source forums or message boards get hacked all the time.

Stan was right on with his comment
"I use Linux Ubuntu on one of my computers and it's more secure than Windows because (a) only about 1% of the OS's are Linux so the hackers don't bother with it ".

That is exactly why hackers target open source website scripts. Because a lot of people use them and never update them. They never update them because it is either too hard to update them or they don't know how. Updating open source scripts is not usually a plug n play update.
Also website scripts can open up holes to allow an attacker to invade a whole server. On some servers there could be thousands of websites for them to gain access to. There are a couple things that hackers do when they hack a server. They use it to send emails. They look for credit card info. They deface any websites on the server. They delete files from the server.

I am not against free or open source programs. If you use them thats cool just beware of what can happen. History seems to always repeat it self.

In fact I wish everyone would switch to Linux. I do not use Linux my self on a daily basis just because everyone around be doesn't and a lot of my programs were not developed for linux.

I am a big Fan of Hacker Safe. They are not cheap but well worth it.
