The 2008 Washington Midget Racing Association season concluded last night with an historic 1st. 17 year old Mark Atkinson won the 2008 Rookie of the Year honors as well as the overall 2008 championship. This historic 1st is a remarkable feat considering the rich history and ultra-competitiveness of this series. The WMRA has been in continuous operation since the early 40's.
It's been over 20 years since a rookie has recorded a single win in the WMRA. Atkinson did it 3 times on the way to recording his historic 2008 championship. In post race interviews last night Atkinson was quick to acknowledge his crew for their efforts: "It's been a remarkable year. I couldn't have done it without Car Chief Tom Margeson, Crew Chief Kenny Ferris, Crew John Gidlund and John Kenderesi and teammates Evan Margeson and Kerstin Smutny. I had a car capable of winning every time out and that's more than I could have possibly asked for". When asked about his future plans Atkinson stated, "We have 3 more USAC National dates on our schedule before the year is over. I hope to build momentum toward a fast paced 2009 in either USAC National competition or the right stock car opportunity if it becomes available".
