Ummm, it's not WoO's nationals or sprint car racing's nationals, it's the Knoxville Nationals. The track created and built the event - so, yeah, that's gonna a hard no and this is just an absolutely terrible suggestion. Sorry - I don't mean to be disrespectful, but I can't think of any other way to state it.

Maybe a simpler plan would be to have a track closer to your home with more local motels start an event from scratch. After about 60 years of hard work, it could be as big as the Knoxville Nationals.

Brand new hotel being built in Oskaloosa currently and to avoid the masses Ottumwa has a ton of hotels an hour away that I doubt are full during nationals. Not overly convenient but an option. I know planning ahead isn't easy but it's your best option here. Last resort find a guy on hose heads that has a spare bedroom or an entire unused finished basement you could stay in. I hear of a lot of people opening up their homes.

As for moving the race or starting a new one... that's kind of like NASCAR talk saying ya buts it's newer and different so it must be better. Sometimes changing tradition of what is proven can backfire on a fan base.

On a personal level its the lack of infrastructure here that keeps me living here. I don't need million people here, restaurants, hotels, or car rentals. I know that doesn't help with travelers for a once a year event but I thought I'd add it in here. Just Don't like the you need to be as big and good as the rest of big cities mentality.

It's not the Nationals without Knoxville Raceway.  It's just the way it is. And anyway who would want it anywhere else. Best track configuration for winged sprints . Best banking.  Best clay. Best prep. Best PR. Best tradition. Best food. Best atmosphere.  Best winged drivers. Period.

Seriously? Do you have a clue what you're even talking about? Knxoville Raceway puts this event on.. not the outlaws or any other circuit. It's not an outlaw points race. The solution you're looking for is other tracks to start putting up big money events in hopes of getting big... example is Jackson Motorplex. Knoxville nationals wont be folding up anytime soon, it's such a wonderful week for race fans.

I still can't believe this is an actual topic..

The event is huge and maybe too big for convenience but it still works every year so maybe people are willing to be a bit inconvenienced to be a part of it. I am sure evryone in Knoxville has figured out a way to capitalize on the event. I was there in the early 90s and every street had a grarage sale. Parking on the lawn and extra food vendors. It is a free country so the locals see a need, ie opportunity and meet that need, ie make money.

When someone with enough resources agrees with you they will build another camp ground, hotel.or restaurant .

Im thinking the track makes enough off that one event to finance the rest of the season and the local businesses are probably close to the same.

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

Not going to happen. YOU might not like Knoxville, but drivers love it and the fans love it too. Besides, Knoxville CREATED and OWNS the Nationals.

I’ve been to dirt tracks from Pennsylvania to California and from Florida to Skagit and I cannot think of a better racing facility.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Eldora in the middle of nowhere?   I don't know since I've never been there, but are there tons of restaurants and hotels around Eldora?   If not, then maybe the Kings Royal should be moved to a more "convenient" facility too if we use Rotorglow's logic.

The big events we have in sprint car racing now are big for their own reasons.   Move any of them and it'll never be the same or as good as it is now.   I go to the Nationals every year and love going to Knoxville and just really enjoy being in Iowa.   Move it somewhere else and I probably don't go any longer.

There's lots of things I want to say here, but since you asked nicely to keep the insults to a minimum, I'll do my best to honor that request. As well, I could give a long , drawn out reply, but for the most part would only be reiterating what others have already said. But I must add.....aren't you contradicting yourself when you say move the Nationals to Charlotte? You want something easier for travel....well let's move it from a somewhat central location in the lower 48 to the eastern quarter of the US , thus making it more difficult for 3/4 of the nation....but I'm guessing you live fairly close to Charlotte, making it easier for you.  The Knoxville Nationals belong in Knoxville, Iowa....end of story.

Yes, Eldora is pretty much in the middle of nowhere.  Greenville is down the roaad about 15 miles & is a decent sized town but in the immediate vicinity of the track, it is in the country.  Knoxville & Eldora are different, but both unique in their own way.

Nothing is quite like Knoxville during the Nationals.  Gotta love a town where the first thing listed on the directional signs in the town is Racetrack.  That is my kind of place!!

Having been to both the Nationals and the World Finals multiple times, I would say, that if you are a person looking for a hotel and a place to "fly" into, Charlotte is much easier than Knoxville to get to, from almost anywhere in the country.  However, as a location for those driving in and camping out, not so much.  I think for this reason, you would also be hardpressed to get 100+ 410's to Charlotte in the middle of the racing season.

Also, while I love both events, they are extraordinarily unique experiences.   Racing at Charlotte is a spectacle and awesome, but has that corporate, self-contained NASCAR feel.  Charlotte has lots of hotels, and is a big metro area, which offers a lot of "opportunities."  You see race shirts around town, but the city itself is oblivious to the event as it happens.

Knoxville is a spectacle of a different sort.  It is a town that completely embraces and is taken over by the event.  Everything about Knoxville and the immediate area is about the Nationals while the Nationals are going on.  There is a charm to this event which Charlotte could never approach.  Walking the streets, seeing the teams and vendors all over town...and all the ancillary activities, there is just a much different atmosphere....and even the facility has a much different feel (and much better, and cheaper food and beer).

I have been to both half a dozen times, and I have gotten to the point where, although I love the World Finals because I am from the Northeast and love being able to see my childhood Big Blocks along with the Late Models and Sprints, for sheer enjoyment of the overall experience I'll take Knoxville anytime.  Also, there are a lot of options of how to do Knoxville, you can stay in town and be steps from all that is happening.  You can camp out of town and relax.  You can do what I've done in the past and fly into and stay in Des Moines, and in between the races, go to the State Fair, and to the Des Moines farmers market, and the Casino...etc. and I have never had a problem getting a hotel in Iowa, as long as I was willing to drive a little bit, and to be honest, because of the Charlotte traffic, I would rather drive 40 miles to Knoxville than 6 miles to CMS sometimes.  Sorry for the length, but there is a reason Knoxville works, and I don't see it changing anytime soon.

You're just toying with us, right?  At first glance I thought you were serious.  So far, you get my vote for post of the year 2020, in the humor category.  Well done.

It is the KNOXVILLE NATIONALS! Moving it is not even an option! KNOXVILLE is the sprintcar capital of the world, not only for the Nats, but the SCHOF! No other sprint race anywhere rival the Nationals. Kings Royal, World Finals, Jackson Nats, ect. are all great events but having been to all of them and more, there is only one Knoxville! Leave it alone! If it aint broke don't fix it!!

Dude.  I know you asked to keep the insults to a minimum but please put the crack pipe down.  Are you the same guy that posted on IOW about combining all 4 national series?  I'm not sure which idea is sillier.
it's been a long winter.  Normalcy shall return soon.

I absolutely agree it needs moved. I vote for 34 raceway in West Burlington, then I could stay at home every night.

I live about six hours north of Knoxville Raceway, maybe five and a half for someone who drives faster and doesn't make as many stops.  Up through my 50's my son and I used to make red-eye drives for some of the bigger weekly shows like double Features.  We did the Nationals driving back and forth over an hour each way and one year we tented in a yard a few miles from the track and showered at the rec center.  A bunch of us hauled a couple campers down there for the 1200# Nationals or whatever they called it one year when it was 100 in the shade and the campers didn't have AC.  Camping was fun when I was still drinking too much beer but those days are over.

Now my son's circumstances changed and I don't get to many races anymore and have lost touch with friends from when I was writing for a racing paper and taking photos.  With no travel companions and a less than stellar second vehicle I barely trust driving to a track 32 miles from home my Knoxville trips are a thing of the past.

As much as I'll admit being at the track is where I'd rather be my circumstances dictate that I watch the final night of the Nationals on PPV.  When I was doing all that work I was investing way more time than the average fan burning the midnight oil writing and editing photos.  Now I walk down to the family room, fire up the laptop and order the PPV and settle down in front of a 55" 4k TV.   I lused to enjoy  chasing races two or three nights a week all summer but never realized how much the time adds up traveling.  PPV fills my needs now and opened up a ton of time to be with family.  Rather than move the Knoxville Raceway closer to you it sounds based on your complaints about heat, motels, tents and all of those things that you're at the same crossroad I was at when my night vision started making this long drives a hassle.  In my case age and me being the only racing fan in our family after my son's circumstances changed.  My son and his buddy have their eyes on a Sprint Car roller for the local limited non wing deal so if that happens I will have to bite the bullet and go to the races more often.  But PPV works great if you get tired of fighting the logistics of attending the Nationals.

Please make sure they don't do it in Milwaukee on the same weekends they have the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the Daytona 500 and the Alaska Fur Rendezvous there.
