HEARTBREAK AT PERRIS FOR ROA – ON TO OHIO AND INDIANA!

(Cypress, CA, July 16, 2019) Brody Roa seemed to be on his way to another top finish in the combined USAC/CRA - USAC Southwest Series race last Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway until a mechanical setback knocked him out of the 30-lap main event.  Less than 24 hours later, the team put the disappointment in its rear-view mirror and left for the Midwest to compete with the USAC National Sprint Car Series for nine races on nine different tracks in 11 nights.

Three-digit temperatures greeted the 25 sprint car teams and early arriving fans at the track that is located on the edge of the desert, 70 miles east of Los Angeles.  Garden Grove, California resident Roa drew a late number for qualifying but still managed to time in 10 fastest with a lap of 17.287.  He then placed third in his heat race.  However, his qualifying time dictated that he had to start 10th in a field that was stacked with heavy hitters upfront.

As soon as the race began, Roa, 28, began navigating his way towards the head of the howling pack.  Staying on the high side of the racetrack for the most part, he picked up one spot on the first lap.  By the end of lap five, he was up to fifth.  Clearly one of the fastest cars on the track, he moved into fourth on the eighth circuit.

Roa’s path towards the front of the field continued when he dove to the inside and made another pass going into turn one on lap 12.  At that point, he had steered his green #91R car from 10th all the way up to third with more than half of the race still remaining.  Unfortunately, that ended up being his last hurrah for the night.  As he was about to complete the 13th lap, he suddenly slowed on the front straightaway and coasted silently into the pits.  His race was done and he ended up with a frustrating 18th place finish.

On the bright side, it was only Roa’s fourth finish out of the top five in 18 sprint car starts in 2019.

Going into the night, the fan-friendly driver had a one-point lead in the USAC/CRA Series and a 53-point lead in the Southwest Series.  Heading into the next race for each, which is at Perris on August 17th, his lead is nine-points in the Southwest Series.  He is now second in the USAC/CRA Series and trails the leader by 49-points.

Ideally, if the car escaped unscathed on Saturday, the team would have done routine maintenance, cleaned it up and packed it into the trailer with the other car and left for Ohio in the daytime.  However, repairs had to be made so they did not hit the road until about 9:00 P.M. Sunday evening.

Roa, crew chief Zac Bozanich and Joe Gibb are driving the hauler back to the Midwest.  Brett Roa, Brody’s dad, will fly into Indiana where the boys will pick him up at the airport on Tuesday.  From there they will proceed to Ohio’s Eldora Speedway for a race on Wednesday night.  After Eldora, they will head west to Indiana the following day for the start of “Indiana Sprint Week.”  You can see the team’s full Midwest schedule with a track directory below.

Roa’s best finishes at “Indiana Sprint Week” the last two years have both come at the Lawrenceburg Speedway.  In 2017 he placed eighth at the Southern Indiana oval and last year he took ninth there.

At each stop along the way, colorful Brody Roa t-shirts will be for sale.  In addition, they will have delicious “Bill’s Smokey Mountain Jerky” available at every track.
