Intense Battle Nets Thomas $2,000 Sprint Car Bandits Win in Cleveland, Texas

Cleveland, TX (06/27/19) by DarinShort.com. A beautiful night for racing greeted a big crowd when the Sprint Car Bandits took on a strong local contingent of teams on Saturday June 22nd in Cleveland Texas – which is the furthest event from the Series based out of the DFW Metroplex area.

The race fans got their money’s worth, as the 25-lap feature race would go green flag for the first dozen laps when an intense battle up front shaped up to be one that fans in the stands won’t soon forget.

Veteran car owner Wayne Brown had his potent number 2w set on full-tilt with driver Dustyn Welch setting a torrid pace through lap traffic as he chipped away at the lead of race leader Marcus Thomas. An interesting match-up on the high banked ¼-mile was the fact that Thomas had a 360C.I. engine under the hood, while Welch would field a hard-hitting 305C.I. engine.

At lap 15, the battle up front would reach maximum intensity as Welch would blast his way to the point. The next pair of corners Thomas would regain the lead again.

Meanwhile, if you were able to watch the battle for the lead with one eye, and current SCB points leader Will Eggimann with the other eye, you would know that Eggimann was quickly making his way through the field from his 11th place starting spot to emerge in the top five at the same time.

Still without a caution since going green, on-track action for the lead heated up even further on lap 17. Welch would set a pick with a lap car in corner two, trapping Thomas on the high side with Welch blasting his way to regain the lead again on the backstretch. In just the next set of corners, lapped traffic would make things interesting again, with the trio of cars coming off corner 4 and Welch in command. Thomas would then catch Welch at the apex of corners 1-2, and after a brief stint of both cars racing side-by-side for the lead, contact ensued, sending the 2w of Welch spinning to a stop, sans front nose wing, while the 15t of Thomas bouncing sideways yet still able to stay under power, putting an end to the epic battle.

While all of this was going on, Eggimann who had further advanced his way towards the lead pack, would grenade his engine coming out of corner four and exit the track at the exact same lap that the caution would come out, ending his certain battle-to-be in the final eight laps.

The final eight laps would go green-white-checkers with Thomas collecting $2,000 for the win, while Welch would charge his way back up to an amazing 5th place finish after restarting at the tail. Jacob Harris would finish in second place after an exciting race-long battle with Trey Schmidt who would come home in third.

Harris would also collect the D&W Towing and Recovery ‘Top 305C.I. Sprint Finisher of the Feature’ award – worth $500 in cash! Harris would end up with a $1,500 payday for his efforts. Cody Stacy would finish 4th.

Dale Wester, pilot of the D&W Towing & Recovery would come into this event second place in series points. His night would start off in hair-raising fashion as he and fellow SCB series competitor Junior Jenkins would make unintended contact at the apex of corners 1-2 in their heat race, with Wester launching off the right-side tires of Jenkins directly into the corner 4 wall. Wester would make hard contact and be forced to the pit area. The crew would work feverishly to get the car back into racing shape just in time for the feature, where he would advance an impressive 8 spots.

Thank you to all the fans for their support of the event. We’d also like to offer a special thank you to the tower scorers and flagman on a job well done, they synced up with the Series officials just great.

Up next for the Sprint Car Bandits series is going to be an exciting night of racing and celebration with the ‘Flags and Fireworks 25’ to be held at 82 Speedway in Petty Texas on Saturday July 6th, along with the www.KoolTrikes.com heat races.

The night will feature a special program during intermission where all the teams in the pit area (sprint cars included) that bring a flag (American, Texas or Checkered) with them, will all go out on the track for a race car parade while fans listen to patriotic music over the grandstand PA and track owner Tracy Peters blows up a massive amount of fireworks in the infield. It should be quite the spectacle. The night will round up with the $2,000 to win and $300 to start ‘Flags and Fireworks 25’ for the Sprint Car Bandits teams.

Then the following Friday, July 12th, the Series heads to Heart O Texas Speedway near Waco with the running of the “MDA Muscling in the Dirt” night at the Speedway.

At that point, the Sprint Car Bandits has scheduled the ‘SCB Summer Break,’ which is something we’ve always wanted to do. Our Summer Break will allow teams and fans to travel north for such events as the Kings Royal, Knoxville 360 & 410 Nationals, and the RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Nationals at Eagle Raceway.

We will then come back with our Fall schedule to round out the 2019 racing season. Be watching for that later in August!
