GRANT SEXTON TAKES SEVENTH AND BROTHER DALTON 11th AT VENTURA!
(Lakeside, CA, March 29, 2019) Grant Sexton, the youngest member of Sexton/Gatlin Racing, scored the team’s best finish thus far in 2019 when he notched a seventh-place finish in the 20-lap California Lightning Sprint Car main event at the Ventura Raceway last Saturday night.
All three Sexton/Gatlin squad members were on hand at the 1/5 of a mile beachside dirt oval. In addition, 24 other competitors were there to battle with the Lakeside-based team. Things started off with qualifying and Brent lapped the track at 12.149. That was good enough for sixth fastest in the field. Sixteen-year-old Dalton was second quickest in the family with a lap of 12.395. That time placed him 12th overall. Grant clicked off a lap of 12.613 and that was 19th fastest on the night.
Grant, who was coming off a tumble in the main at the season opener the previous week at Bakersfield, was first up in heat race action. He started seventh in the first eight-lapper and ended up sixth. That sent him to the B main event. Dalton and Brent were both in the field for heat race three. Dalton started third and finished fifth and would then join his brother in the B main. For Brent, the news was not quite so good as he blew an engine on lap five and was done for the night.
Dalton and Grant were both slotted into the B main where they would start fifth and seventh respectively. To get to the A main from the 10-lap race, they would need to finish in the top-10. That proved to be no problem as Grant brought it home in third and Dalton finished just behind him in fourth.
With their dad observing from the sidelines, the sibling duo started alongside each other in the eighth row. Grant started on the inside with Dalton just to his right. From the drop of the green flag to the checkered – a time interrupted twice for red flags – the two teenage drivers kept their noses clean and moved forward. At the end, Grant had passed eight cars and finished and impressive seventh. Dalton raced his way past five cars and came across the line 11th.
Going into the next race at the Barona Speedway on April 6th, Dalton is 11th in the championship standings and Grant is 14th. The uncharacteristic mechanical ills that have plagued Brent over the first two races sees him 27th in the championship chase.
San Diego locals can catch all three Sexton’s on KUSI television’s “Good Morning San Diego” this Sunday with host Dave Stall.
Exciting news coming from the team regarding the April 6th Barona race. As well as Brent, Dalton and Grant, Sexton/Gatlin Racing will also be fielding a car for NASCAR Truck Racing regular Sheldon Creed.
