USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series

TIMMONS TOPS SANTA MARIA FEATURE; LIGGETT WINS CHAMPIONSHIP
By Lance Jennings

OCTOBER 12, 2018... Officially leading all 30-laps, Ryan Timmons (Pleasant Hill, CA) claimed the last point race of the year at Santa Maria Raceway. Racing the family owned #29T Timmons Auto & Truck Repair / Evergood Fine Food Maxim, Timmons earned his second $1,500 USAC West Coast Sprint Car feature win of the season over fast qualifier Tristan Guardino, Trent Carter, “Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr., and Steve Hix.

For Timmons, the “Championship Night” victory was not easy but luck helped the 2016 Rookie of the Year. Shannon McQueen, who started on the pole position, suffered a flat tire on the initial start and was restarted at the back of the field. From there, third starting Timmons inherited the pole position and got the jump on visiting Arizona driver Sterling Cling to grab the early lead. Fourth starting Austin Liggett began to pressure Timmons for the top spot, but a tangle with slower traffic ended Liggett’s night on lap six. Now in second, Guardino was next to challenge Timmons, but the leader held strong.

As the laps counted down, “Hollywood” Danny Faria took over second and mounted several challenges for the lead. Faria pressured Timmons and contact between the two resulted in a Faria spin on lap 27. On the restart, Ryan was in control, but a bobble handed the lead to Guardino. However, a caution flag soon flew over the speedway and handed the lead back to Timmons. From there, Timmons got an excellent restart and roared to the Santa Maria checkered flags.

Ryan Timmons opened the night by qualifying tenth out of the twenty-two car field and finished third in his heat race. As this writing goes to press, Ryan finished the point season ranked third in the standings with two feature wins, three heat race victories, ten top-10 finishes, and 57 feature laps led to his credit.

Tristan Guardino (Fremont, CA) started sixth and finished second in Santa Maria’s “Championship Night.” Piloting the family owned #15T Dorso’s Automotive / Allied Auto Sales Maxim, Guardino posted his second Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award and ran second to Steve Hix in his heat race. Tristan closed out the point chase ranked second with two feature wins, seven heat race victories, one Saldana Racing Products / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award, eleven top-10 finishes, and 49 feature laps led on the year.

Trent Carter (Terra Bella, CA) raced from eleventh to third at Santa Maria Raceway. Driving the family owned #13 Porterville Lock & Safe / Porterville Collision Center Maxim, Carter was fifth quick in time trials, scored fourth in his heat race, and claimed his third Santa Maria championship. The 2014 Co-Rookie of the Year finished seventeenth in West Coast points on the strength of four top-10 finishes.

“Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr. (Tipton, CA) started eighth, challenged Timmons for the lead, and salvaged a fourth place finish after a late spin. Racing Jim Richardson’s #8 Wiesz Racing Engines / The Heater Guy DRC, Faria qualified second overall and won the Keizer Aluminum Wheels / Rod End Supply Heat Race #2. The two-time champion ended the campaign seventh in points with one feature win, six heat race victories, one Saldana Racing Products / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award, eight top-10 finishes, and 39 feature laps led.

Steve Hix (Ventura, CA) had another solid night with a fifth place finish at Santa Maria Raceway. Piloting his #57 No Limit Powder Coating / Delano Roofing Triple X, Hix was seventh fast in time trials and won the night’s Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1. Last year’s rookie contender finished the season ranked fifth in the standings with two heat race victories, nine top-10 finishes, and 3 feature laps led to his credit.

James Herrera (New Cuyama, CA) earned the night’s Saldana Racing Products / Racing Optics Hard Charger / “Best Passing Job” honors with an eleventh place run from twentieth. Driving his #5J Cuyama Buckhorn / City Motors Collision Maxim, Herrera qualified twentieth overall and placed seventh in his heat race. The former Santa Maria Champion tied with Kaleb Montgomery for 19th in the USAC West Coast point standings.

Brandon Wiley (Santa Maria, CA) raced to victory in the Competition Suspension Inc. / Rod End Supply Heat Race #3. Racing the Team 33 owned #33B Kittle Motorsports / All American Drilling Schnee, Wiley was ninth fast in time trials and scored nineteenth in the main event. The 2017 Rookie of the Year finished fifteenth in points with one heat race victory and two top-10 finishes in the campaign.

Austin Liggett (Tracy, CA) won the 2018 USAC West Coast Championship by seventeen points over Tristan Guardino. Piloting the family owned #83 Excel Environmental Services / Lucas Oil Maxim, Liggett qualified third overall, ran second to Brandon Wiley in his heat race, and scored twentieth in the feature after an early exit. Austin claimed the title on the strength of two feature wins, two Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, five heat race victories, one Saldana Racing Products / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award, eleven top-10 finishes, and 91 feature laps led.

Starting Wednesday, November 21st, the USAC West Coast Sprint Cars will return for two nights of action at Ventura Raceway. Co-sanctioned with the VRA Sprints, the non-point “78th Annual Turkey Night Grand Prix” will also feature the USAC Western and National Midget Series for practice on Wednesday and racing on Thursday.
